Samuel out for the season!

Welp. Good outlook for recovery at least.

I suffered a gnarly high ankle sprain playing pickup basketball in college. The doctor said the same thing, that I‎t would have been better to have broken my ankle. Took me a couple months to get right with no surgery or crutches for the most part. Curtis should be fresh by OTAs.

That's true looking at his numbers for the season overall, but this was really the 1st game where he had a significant defined role, and he had 5 catches for 45 yards before getting injured.  On top of that, he truly was helping to stretch the field.

I don't think this loss is insurmountable, but it's not insignificant either on top of trading Benjamin away.

We better hope Olsen is going to be back and able to contribute, b/c our WR corp right now is Funchess, Shepard, Bersin, Clay.  It's just being truthful to state that is arguably the worst in the league.

Having CMC's ability as a receiver helps too, but it still is a big loss IMO.  If Olsen & Byrd can't come back healthy, it is tough to see how we will have enough firepower on the outside to compete in the playoffs.

If our running game remains as good as it has been, maybe we can overcome.  I wouldn't be unhappy with resigning Philly at this point.

Not just looking at the numbers. Having watched him for the past 10 games, I could see this:

He has considerable speed and athleticism, but is clearly still very raw and is still at least a season a way from being a solid player.  He has flashed in moments, but he's not the guy whose going to carry us deep into the playoffs. He has a long way to go.

Robert Woods contract is 5 years 39 mil and not a single person on this board would say that was a smart descsion by the Rams before. He was average at best on Buffalo and honestly he really doesn't desrve that contract now.

Also if u think our owner would let us bring in DJax then lol.

The only WRs I'm upset we passed on in any past draft are Stephon Diggs (I was heavily on his train and wanted us to nab him in the third) and Russel Sheppard. I don't blame any GM for passing on USC WRs, especially us.

Anyway, I'm upset for Samuel, he was just hitting his stride, but a core of Greg, Funch, CMC, Shep and Dickson is fine. Klien and Byrd will do fine in the slot and at least bring the speed Samuel had.

Meh I’ve always been a Woods fan and he’s shown the ability to do what he’s doing this year in years past. He’s a plus blocker in the run game as well.

Agholor and Smith-Schuster are two others I was high on from USC who are both having good seasons. Can’t judge a kid by the school. I wasn’t high on Lee fwiw.

i was upset about Diggs too, he was just sitting there for the taking. We whiffed so many times in both the draft and free agency it really is amazing. Just by pure luck you’d think they would’ve found something by now.

Jalin Marshall would actually fill Samuel’s role nicely but I know Marshall was suspended for 4 games this season so I’ll just assume he’s not even on the radar

Oh me too. Woods was one of the USC WRs I liked coming out (the other was Agholor, didn't like Lee and I didn't see much of Smith-Schuster.) However it's fair to judge prospects based on coaching and program tradition as far as NFL potential goes. It's why Clemson WRs are so trusted and Sabans defensive prospects are so highly drafted.

Diggs never ceases to frustrate me because he was a former high first round draft pick with a good size-speed combonation and wasn't afraid to go over the middle, knocked down for "injury concerns" after he played most of if not all his games his final season. I'll never understand how we passed on him with our need at WR especially that season.

It's very frustrating that we haven't found a consistent deep threat WR and I really, really hope it's addressed soon. Unfortunately this draft is kind of weak on speed, though I do like James Washington a fair bit.

Let me try to help

Anytime you "sprain" your ankle, you damage your ligament. That's why sprains are graded by how bad the tear in the ligament is.

Obviously NFL teams are tight lipped about the exact injury but sometimes it's actually better to have a complete tear instead of a partial one, as it generally heals faster. The fact that he's going to surgery makes me think it's a Grade 3 or a complete tear.

I mentioned this to SACA on twitter last night but you can not diagnose a fracture based off a video. Anytime you have an injury like this there is obviously a risk for fracture, but the only way to truly diagnose that is an X-ray

I’m a big time Dante Pettis fan. Couldn’t help but notice him when watching John Ross last year. He’d be a nice compliment to Funchess.

Like you said, the draft isn’t the greatest but its an interesting WR FA class. Anyone not drafted in the first round from the famous 2014 WR draft will be a UFA.

Paul Richardson, Donte Moncrief, John Brown all bring that deep threat playmaking ability.

If Hurney can make the necessary cuts to save some cap will have room to add a real WR. But based on history, I won’t hold my breath

I was stunned when we traded KB and didn't trade for another WR. Now the injury bug has bitten and we're scarping the bottom of the barrel. Granted Byrd is actually faster than Samuel, but can we rely on him to do more that toast 2nd string players? Let's hope.

This

I was not happy with the KB trade. Not because we traded him necessarily, but we pretty much got nothing for him. I think we need to sign some sure handed  veteran somewhere available ... I don't know the deal with  Victor Cruz, Percy Harvin is retired but we can get him off the couch ... somebody
