So.. how does sitting in a booth, calling the game, any different than.... watching it?

I think the Vikings are just doing their due diligence and officially brought up the concern to ensure he isn't given any behind the scenes access which is provided to commentators to some extent. As long as he is just in the booth and calling the game, I agree it is no different.

Typically guest commentators attend practices and production meetings. Hopefully that won't be the case here.

this is why you read....

Olsen won't be in production meetings or at Vikings practice as broadcast teams commonly are, but is slated to be in the booth Sunday.

"We are excited for the opportunity to make this Sunday's broadcast fun and insightful with Pro Bowler Greg Olsen," FOX said in a statement to Pelissero. "We fully respect the Vikings concerns and will limit the amount of pre-game access allowed to Greg. We look forward to welcoming him in the broadcast booth and giving viewers a unique perspective this Sunday."

A league spokesperson told Pelissero: "We did not object to this. The player will be in the broadcast booth and will not be attending practice or a production meeting."

non-issue.

Normally the announce team has meets with the head coach and a few of the top players on each team to discuss the upcoming game. In this case obviously Olsen won't participate in that part because no player or coach would talk to him about tactics.

Yeah but the coaches don't tell them anything. Can you imagine greg olsen debriefing on what he learned?

"Yeah, they're going to play hard, there's 53 captains on the team, etc."

I don't blame them. He shouldn't be given behind the scenes access.

Maybe they shouldn't give behind the scenes access... I mean honestly, who's to say Smitty isn't feeding us info that he gets? Or other former players in the booth feeding their old teams hints here and there? What info is really so important that broadcasters get that teams can't get by scouting on their own? It's a lame flop by the Vikings.

This.  Being in the booth will not give him a competitive edge playing.  I suspect all the poo he is going to have to do as an announcer is new and he will likely be so engrossed in those concepts that the nuances of the actual game will be an afterthought.
