It's funny to hear huddlers talk about audibles

It was a brilliantly designed play. Maybe it came from Chud's book or someone else's, but it doesn't matter. Very few plays are truly original for any given OC.

But the OP is correct, it doesn't matter if Cam audibles, Shula deserves credit as well.

I thought he called a great game last night.

Pretty much what I'm saying. QB of course deserves credit for recognizing the defense and making the right adjustment. In addition, the OC doesn't make the gameplan in a vacuum. The QB is involved in the process as well.

As an aside, I'm not just making this poo up. It comes from two decades of watching NFL football and reading countless nerdy articles. As I mentioned in the Reddit post, Pat Kirwan's "Take your eyes off the Ball" covers this stuff in enough detail to be really interesting, but not so deep to bore the casual fan wanting to dig a bit deeper. I highly recommend the read.

It's funny the false realities people generate to support what they want to argue. They make zero attempt to understand what's really going on.

There is a lot of info regarding this online written by coaches at all levels for coaches.

If people are saying Cam completely changes things up it's super convenient how they were lined up nicely to facilitate that so seamlessly. Read and think.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Most fans judge solely on results and set up their narratives around that.

I get it, but it leads to some pretty far out conclusions from time to time.

2015 we were the top offense in the league.

2016 our entire offensive line is either injured or shuffled around.

2017 Cam misses the offseason with an injured shoulder while we're "evolving" the offense with a ton of new players.

It's tough to put something consistent together when that happens, especially when you already have one of the most complicated running games in the league. You go back and watch the early games this season and you see a ton of missed throws and horrible run blocking. Things have tightened up as they usually do with Rivera's teams late in the season.

I'm not saying the Shula is the best OC in the league (far from it), but the people who say he's not creative are so incredibly off base it's not even funny. I remember back in the Fox days when the flea-flicker was the craziest thing we'd ever do. Times are better now.

Good posts. Good luck, @SixMileDrive. I explained where audibles come from and what the QB actually did at the line a few years ago and it was basically ignored. I also advocate not taking one play at a time; it has to be understood in the context of the personnel, game and opponent. Actually, I think there's too much drinking while watching games. :)

Is the Reddit group a bit more advanced than here?

I wouldn't say that.

I think the format of Reddit leads to better discussions than your standard message board format though. The people who scream loudly end up getting a lot of attention here, whereas there they get downvoted out of the conversation. You'd never see a comment or thread by someone like @PanthersUnited2.0 due to the Reddit algorithms. They'd just fall off from all the downvotes.

I think there's ultimately more knowledge here, but it is often drowned out by all the noise.

So you are saying that maybe throwing a bomb on third and short might actually be a smart play from time to time?

Seriously though, you are probably right. I started this thread b/c I made a similar comment on reddit that got a lot of positive attention. I was pretty surprised at the difference in response. To be fair, the tone was a bit different, so maybe some of it's on me.

There's something that's about the Panther's fanbase that's been been bothering me for a while now. There's a narrative that Shula will call a play then Cam will get to the line and audible out of Shula's shitty call into something he wants to run. Cam is apparently fixing all of Shula's mistakes.

TL;DR: QB's aren't out there fixing OC's mistakes when they audible, they are doing exactly what the OC is telling them to do.

Actually, you've got it exactly backwards in your description above.  Team Audible are the ones who complain that every bad play is Cam's fault BECAUSE HE DOESN'T AUDIBLE OUT OF THE BAD PLAY AT THE LINE.

"WHY DINTCHA AUDBLIZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZE OUTA THAT BAD CAWL CAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM?!?!??!!?!?"
