Why Are We Still Missing A Deep Shot Passing Game?

Because with the exception of the last game, we have not done much in the running game. If we start averaging 150-200 yards/game, the deep ball will be there with the one-on-one matchups we need ... But then, Mike Shula may send TEs and people like Funchess on go routes

If we hit a few underneath routes that are cleared by the deep ones, then the opposing safeties will start thinking which is what we want. Then we may have more one on ones with some deep attempts, but we have to throw to the wide open crossing (often Shepard) first.

Why is it that we don't seem to use the crossing routes like other teams. I mean, yeah, we use it, but with the speed Samuel, Shep, and Byrd when he returns (Hopefully) possess, that pattern has success written all over it.

I know it's easy to say behind my keyboard, and maybe I miss a few. But to my eyes, we don't utilize it enough. Outs, and fades? Yup. Curls? Those to. Posts, and seams? Why yes Gertrude, those too. But crossing routes? They just don't seem, to me, to be the staple they maybe should be.

We do, but we dont throw to them. Shepard is often open more times than not. Cam has become a 2 read guy, with his second read usually to CMC as the checkdown.

Why risk Cam's health for low completion % passes down field to newbies? Why let the defense tee off on Cam to try and connect deep? Not worth it at all. We can barely protect him on short and medium passes. It's not like we have A.J Green out there going deep. We'll rebuild the o-line and try more deep stuff next season. For now if we're going to risk Cam I want the ball in his hands on the run down field where he can get down when he needs to do so.

I do think that there is a certain percentage of the Panthers fan base that simply want a more entertaining offense, and they're bored with our present offense even if we're winning. I will never understand that. Every Panthers game is exciting to me even if the offense isn't flashy with the ball flying around the field.

I just don't think it is as simple as all that. QBs don't read the entire field, they usually only read the half of field the routes are called for. So if the routes are on the left, Cam won't see the guys on the right.

Unless he leaves the pocket, or gets an inordinate amount of time. Cam just does not have the time for all that. And almost no QB does.

Also, you should take into account the comfort level Cam has with his WRs. He is still learning Samuel, and Shep. Once Cam is more comfortable, he will be more willing to go their way.

There are way to many variables to just say; "Cam has become a 2 read QB."

I wonder if our offense is changing by week to week into whatever they're trying to do. We only had 1 deep throw to Clay last week. KB said he felt the offense going into a different direction. Maybe the lack of run game is hurting the passing game. Maybe Shula does have something he's trying to integrate that could work.

I also had to add this, but somebody said Stew kills this team momentum every time he touches the ball and it's true, look at this

giphy.gif

Stew for some reason didn't follow the blockers and there was a hole that opened between 79 and 68 but as you can see by his lack of quickness on that cutback, I don't see the burst that Stew could have hit it fast enough

And yet Stewart running the ball consistently to the right is what set up McCaffrey's TD run so beautifully. I don't think I've seen an entire Defense bite on a fake like that in a very long time. You just can't pick out one play to complain about without seeing how it fits in the whole scheme.

This isn't Madden where the computer has all the plays possible and you just click buttons to have your players perform. I said last week after the KB trade that no one should expect to see major changes and I was right. Shula had 2 days to adjust, the WRs had 2 days to adjust, Cam had 2 days to adjust. Maybe a new play here and there (McCaffrey's TD was a beaut) but not big changes. And downfield passes are a big change for everyone. Chemistry and trust, especially with a rookie and a WR new to the team, along with blocking and route running can't be picked up in 2 days. It's more than simply an increase of snaps played. I think we'll see more creativity and long throws Monday night. Something needs to keep Suh off Cam lol.

That wasn’t Stewart, that was Cam who took up the two edge defenders

D. Jax probably would have came here for less. Would have been the first time in his career he got a legit QB. I honestly don't think Dave was allowed to play FA. JR just brought back a bunch of old Panthers and Ryans brother. It's really hard to figure out what was Dave and what was JR this year. I still say Dave's biggest blunder was how he handled Josh Norman. That was 100% Dave.

I think Djax regrets going to TB

Of course it wasn't all on one player. The line and Cam had to sell it too. But Stewart's previous runs to the right had set this up. The edge defenders were, yes, probably spying on Cam but they were no where near him, yards away, so I don't think they knew he still had the ball. No one charged Cam. McCaffrey goes out left, downfield and there is nobody anywhere near him, no CB, no Safety, no LB, no DE. NOBODY. It was a beautifully called and executed play.
