Why Are We Still Missing A Deep Shot Passing Game?

I wonder if our offense is changing by week to week into whatever they're trying to do. We only had 1 deep throw to Clay last week. KB said he felt the offense going into a different direction. Maybe the lack of run game is hurting the passing game. Maybe Shula does have something he's trying to integrate that could work. 

I also had to add this, but somebody said Stew kills this team momentum every time he touches the ball and it's true, look at this

Stew for some reason didn't follow the blockers and there was a hole that opened between 79 and 68 but as you can see by his lack of quickness on that cutback, I don't see the burst that Stew could have hit it fast enough

we were supposed to be moving from a low percentage passing game to a higher one and i think we kind of started doing that more consistently.

run game got some traction this week, whether it's sustainable is something we'll have to wait and see on, but if it is then we might see some deeper stuff open up but i think the evolution is taking hold a little.

less big plays and more "just move the chains" plays.

Agree. It seems the gripe morphed from why we only go deep to why we never go deep in the blink of a eye

Because the Saints signed our #1 deep thread !!! I know, he sometimes couldn't catch the ball ... but, when he ran deep ... OMG ...

Not true Cam held the ball awhile against a decent Falcons pass rush. It's more just no one getting open. I still have no clue why we didn't bring in the best deep ball WR in the game in D. Jax. Pair him with one of the best deep ball QB's in the game in Cam and Shula might would have been a HC next year.

Same here. Gettleman shitted the bed with paying out the ass for an unproved LT in Matt Kalil while he could have paid some respectable sum to Desean Jackson and we could've been killing it this season. And I bet Moton is probably better than Kalil even if hes a rookie, could he really be that much worse ? Kalil is reminding me lately of SB 50 and 2016 Mike Remmers.

D. Jax probably would have came here for less. Would have been the first time in his career he got a legit QB. I honestly don't think Dave was allowed to play FA. JR just brought back a bunch of old Panthers and Ryans brother. It's really hard to figure out what was Dave and what was JR this year. I still say Dave's biggest blunder was how he handled Josh Norman. That was 100% Dave.

    Well, to be fair. It is difficult to throw deep when a Defense brings pressure. Which is why Offenses try to recognize when a blitz is coming. So they can find the hot route, and get the ball out quicker.

    I was wondering if I was seeing thing, because no one else seemed to notice. But man, it looks different this year. Of course it could be because we know what he has gone through, so we may be seeing things.

Without the slightest doubt, this was a bigger hit than anything else for the year. Dickson had that one stellar game and some good ones, but it's not the same impact Olsen has on how defenses play. Olsen disrupting the center of the field, requiring good or double coverage, has been a key to not just our passing game, but our running game as well. Dickson has been good, but he doesn't have that same threat ability, plus there's no one to take up for the role Dickson was playing in our two TE sets (Manhertz just ain't cutting it at all). 

Olsen comes back and things will start getting better. If he hits the ground running and playing as hard as he did before, the roof will tear off this thing fast.

I've just gone back and reviewed all games since Cam arrived in 2011. Only one other time did he have fewer than 5 players catching passes - our playoff loss to San Fran in 2013, when 4 players recorded catches.

3 players making catches is just shockingly low... Definitely suggests Chemistry is not quite there with some of the new guys.

O-line failing to protect Cam enough on long developing plays seems to be an issue combined with a lack of deep threats since Ginn left

    You know what gets my giddy going? If we win Monday, we will be 7-3 at the bye. With Olsen coming back, and Byrd a week later. 

 

    With still 7 weeks to go, plus the bye. We have Samuel, and Shep taking on larger roles. Which means they will be getting larger chunks of those practice reps. The more practice time they get with Cam, the more comfortable Cam will be during the games.

 

    Throw in Cam's comfort level with Greg, (Which should only hinge on the level of play Greg can achieve.) and getting Byrd's speed back on the field.

 

    So...IMO, by the end of the year. The chemistry, which seems to be in the beginning stages, could very well be in full bloom.
