Why Are We Still Missing A Deep Shot Passing Game?

I'll admit that it was nice to see the offense improve on Sunday, but something is still bugging me about the passing game. Why is it that we aren't even trying to take deep shots down the field? Its kinda frustrating seeing the Rams , Colts, and just about every other NFL team do this at least once a game but we seem to be severely lacking this element. What would it take for this to become a factor again? I know Samuel and Clay are fast enough, is it just the play calls? Are they not getting open?

Also, Cam's passing stats in recent games has been pretty bad. How do you think this might improve in future games?

Its coming...esp. when Olsen returns. Samuel is heating up...and dont forget Byrd is coming back week 11, I think. Byrd, Samuel, Cmc, Olsen and Funch.. possibilities are crazy. Will Shula utilize his players correctly is the question.

And Cam is damn near unstoppable in Nov/Dec.... the Lions and Patriot games were not flukes.

IMO, the lack of chemistry is the biggest issue. I mean, how many reps does he have with Clay, and he got the only deep pass I remember from Sun.. The same with Samuel. When the chemistry starts to click, maybe the deeper throws will come.

Another thing to remember is, we really are trying to evolve this Offense. We are still in the beginning stages. Once everyone gets on the same page. I would expect the Offense to take another step forward.

As to his passing stats lately. I truly believe that Olsen is a bigger loss than what we expected. Now KB is gone. Cam really does not have a lot of practice time with who we have. Other than Funch anyway.

We looked to be trending up lately. If that continues, yeaaaa.

The correct answer is 100% the lack of pass protection from the poor OL play. Cam simply doesn't have the time to sit back in the pocket and wait for the speedy guys to get past the defense downfield. And when they try a timing route too far downfield, defense has time to adjust while ball is in air, and the safeties pick it off.

Being conservative with Cam's shoulder perhaps?

Dang, I hadn't thought of that. But, I also hope that it isn't true. If his shoulder is still sore. He is hiding it well. But then again, IMO, his throwing motion looks different this year. Is that me? Or does anyone else see that?

It's not 100%, it doesn't take long for speedsters to get down feild. Maybe with KB and Funch it took a while. Usually with a go Cam and the receiver get the ball out at the end of his drop back.

Cam gives zero fugs though.

Plus Cam has been throwing all his 20-30 yard mid rangers with his standard laser heat.  Give the window he tries to put those they probably put more on his shoulder than the deep one that has some loft.

I think it is 2 things.

1.  The predictability of our calls (but that is every team)

2.  Simply put our WRs don't get open.   Being fast doesn't mean you can get open deep easily.   Our WRs IMO don't do a good job winning off the line, running good routes, dealing with early contact in routes.  I mean go watch some of the real deep threats in the NFL.  They win those routes early on.....the speed just lets them separate downfield often when already have the route won.  Our WRs basically just have someone riding them the entire way on vertical routes.

We're taking some deep shots we're just not connecting on them. We lack a real deep threat WR. I think Samuel can develop into that but despite his time speed I'm not surprised that he isn't that as a rookie.

I never saw us take a shot last game to anyone except Dickson in the middle. Games before that don't count since he's asking about post kb era
