Quick Question

In an alternative universe, the Panthers passed on CMC and drafted Hunt in the 3rd round.

1. Does Rivera recognize his potential?

2. Is Hunt active on game days?

3. Is he third string behind Stewart and Fozzy?

You know Jeremy. TECHNICALLY that is 3 quick questions. lol

    1. We can hope so. But who knows?

    2. We can hope so. But who knows?

    3. Probably at least Stew. But who knows?

I would like to say that Rivera is not the first, nor probably the last, HC who won't trust a rookie. Rookies tend to make mistakes. Coaches can lose their jobs when mistakes lead to loses. Hence, coaches tend to distrust rookies.

You said the dude lacks heart. Anything else you say about him is meaningless when you actually type that out and press send.

When thinly veiled completely unproven and baseless criticisms like this are the go to swipes from some our own fans after witnessing Newton literally will his team to victories by putting himself through the ringer physically, it's really difficult not to tend to ponder if these criticisms would still exist if he were white.

To relieve the criticism, Cam doesn't need to turn himself white.

He just needs to turn himself into a better passer.

No, that's just where your reading stops. I've offered criticism here and there, along with praise. Heck, if you weren't so one track minded you'd see that I praise Cam more often, much more often than I criticize him. But I get it, you're a Cam fan, first and foremost, and so even the slightest question sticks in your craw.

And yeah, I did question his leadership and heart a time or two, and his play answered. That was good enough for me at the time and I said so. Heck, I'm enjoying watching Cam with his mojo back here of lates.

But dude, you've gotta contribute more than just running out to bark at folks when they question Cam.

If you were consistent, wouldn’t be a need to call you out. Can’t whine when someone calls out the owner or the coach, but be all willy nilly with the criticism when it’s one of the players. I’m going to call you out.

And yes, I am a “Cam fan” and have no problems admitting that. He’s my favorite player, and contrary to what you and a few others on here believe, many people out there have favorite players that they go to bat for. Just because they have a fav player, doesn’t negate their fanhood in anyway. So, cut it out with the “I’m a better fan than you, you only joined because so and so player” shaming tactic.

Check my resume, though jack. I’ve been on this board since 2008, long before Cam. That’s 10 years I’ve been here. Born and raised in the best city in the Carolinas, Winston-Salem. I guess with all that I’d consider myself a panthers fan first.

Delhomme was beloved and revered for his heart and grit and how he often played with his emotions on his sleeve. Nobody questioned his heart or his leadership, even after throwing half a dozen picks in one of the biggest playoff games in franchise history.

Eh, Newton is still spotty accuracy wise. No argument there. But he's still more than adequate for us to win with consistently, and with this defense, as long as other offensive players are stepping up, with Cam behind center we should be able to compete with any team.

You have consistency, I'll give you that. And you've been on the board for a year longer than me. Congrats on Winston-Salem, I spent about a decade of my life there and still hold it dear to my heart.

Look, I'm just getting completely overwhelmed by the calls for new coaches and people saying our ownership is everything from jurassic to racist. After a while, the poo just wears thin. After a win, could we at least celebrate a bit? Do we immediately have to go into this self-loathing, emo-hump deal twenty minutes after the game ends? After a win?

I'm just flat out tired of it.

So when his same usual faults that have been showing on Sundays the last 7 years show up during wins, we’ll ignore them and celebrate?

I think some of us are just getting tired of the lack of big picture success. So even though it’s awesome that we won Sunday, some of us don’t want to wait till all these faults show up again in a big time game like the SuperBowl (because they will).

It feels as if so much has to go right every Sunday in order for us to win when that shouldn’t be the case. A bad bounce or two and it’s gameover.

Unless you're Belichick, that's the story of every game, every week. Or you're the Browns, in the other direction.

The big picture is never pretty. There's a huge span between the Packers of the 60s and the Packers after Favre -- and that's some scary territory. Same goes for the Colts between Unitas and Manning, and they are spiraling down again. Heck, the Patriots before 2000... whew, that's some bad, bad football there.

Dynasties are mythical things and we haven't had one yet. The back to back winning seasons is a stumbling block, but we also haven't had the back to back to back to back to back losing seasons of a ton of other teams. Ask the diehard fans of the Saints, Falcons and Buccaneers of our own division how it felt to not post a winning season for near decade-long stretches. Imagine the futility of Detroit's fandom. Or Cincinnati. Or Buffalo. Jacksonville.

I won't even take a swing at Cleveland here. Lord, we ought to send them get well soon cards at the beginning of each season.

Building a team in this day and age is like trying to build a house of cards, outdoors at a party. Sooner or later, someone's going to bump the table or a puff of wind will blow in. Once in a while you hit magic and you go to the big dance.

You make some points, but in the end, there we are, contending in most of his seasons. We even made it into the playoffs with a losing record (statistical fluke, but he did beat out Sean Payton for the honor that year).

Andy Reid is one heck of a coach, but even he hasn't been a consistent playoff contender throughout his career. He posts a .595 career victory percentage as a head coach, which isn't damning of him but points to how hard it is to be a successful coach in this league.

Mike Tomlin? The guy is great. Not a complaint in the world against him, one of the best coaches in the game. It sames something when you are only the third head coach in such a storied franchise's history. Knoll, Cowher, Tomlin. All three got rings for their team. All three also had long tenures to get through up and down years. They each built a string of winning seasons, though, and that made them great.

Rivera, he's done pretty good by us. Yeah, he tends to play not to lose, but its hard not to when the fanbase has their knives out. And there are some of you that never put those knives away.

Mr. Scott, I used to love coming onto this forum and reading your pieces explaining in depth what happened in a game, seeing some wrinkles that I didn't notice, getting a better understanding of The Game as much as the game I'd just watched. I really looked forward to it. Then, a year or two ago, you just chucked it all and sidled in with the guys who start talking about the boat sinking as soon as we leave the dock. It saddens me. I mean, I understand, that's the popular klatch around here now, but they make for miserable company.

Me, I'm going to cheer for the coach while he's here, I'm gonna cheer for Cam while he's here, and I'm going to cheer for the Panthers as long as I'm on this planet.

I'm not sure you get it, but this sucks for me. It sucks because I think Rivera is one of the nicest most respectable guys you could find. He's easily the most likable coach the Panthers have ever had. Add in that he's a guy who never gave up on his dreams despite loads of setbacks. And his family? Wonderful.

You want guys like that to succeed.

Unfortunately, there are major issues with how he does his job.

My biggest disappointment with Rivera is that I wanted the guy we met in his introductory press conference. That guy was great. Unfortunately, shortly into his tenure, that guy disappeared.

Rivera went into this job as an ass kicker. When you do that, you're going to get pushback. You want to stay an ass kicker? You can't let that stop you. When that happened with Rivera, he decided to back down and become everybody's friend, and here we are.

He's very loyal, and normally that's a very admirable quality. As an NFL head coach though, what you have to be most loyal to is results. Instead, Rivera has shown that he'll defend underperforming players and coaches rather than hold them accountable.

That is just not a path to pro football success.

Can you honestly deny that we have to spend the second half of so many games hoping we do enough to keep a lead by the end? Does that MO sound like something a guy who sounded as aggressive as Rivera did when he first got here would have?

Bottom line for me: Rivera lost his guts. He's now less of a leader to this team than some of his players are, and having Hurney as GM again makes that situation even worse.

So basically,  if you want to see a story play out where a nice guy does a half decent job and gets rewarded for it and people like him, then by all means Ron Rivera is the right choice.

But if you want a winning Panthers franchise, this isn't going to cut it.

    • The agenda was building around Bryce.  2 WR, 3 olinemen, TE, and a potentially elite RB.  I stood up for Bryce all last year because I didn't think you could evaluate him properly with what we had last year in coaching, play calling and personal.  Bryce was the 2nd least pressured QB in the last 2 weeks because of the money Morgan spent on the line.  Despite Bryce looking horrible I'd say Morgan has had an exceptional beginning as GM. Here some more things I liked. Trevin Wallace looked like a banger in preseason.  Resigned Brown.  Gave Horn his 5th year option and Horn is playing very well. *Flipped a 7th round pick for a starting CB in Michael Jackson who has also played well. Filled a depleted roster with solid vets and if you really look at the cap this is a 2 year play.  Almost everyone except the 2 elite guards signed a 2 year deal. Did not pay Stephen Gilmore 10 million for one season. *Got the 0-2 Rams 2nd pick next year. Set a culture and tone of the type of players we want.  *Dawgs. *Elite GM moves.
