Who starts at WR2 now?

I’ve talked myself into believing that we should start Samuel at WR2 on the outside.

Im thinking that Ron quote about wanting to simplify things for him is related to using him too much as a gadget player with all the options and reverses and poo. Stick him on the outside and let him concentrate on running routes and being a WR so he can find some rhythm. Add the other stuff in once he gets comfortable.

I have no clue if any of that is true but it’s what I’m choosing to believe.

Choose to believe something until proven otherwise- I like it....and hope you're right, but I think that Shepard's role will see the biggest increase.

Being a gadget player is what Samuel was in college.  A hybrid RB/WR guy.  CMC really occupies the role he is designed for.  The standard Getttlemen double dip seen in every draft where he spends a pick on a dude whose job is occupied

Asking him to be a #2 WR and stretch opposing defenses for an offense is something he simply hasn’t done.

Does the Tampa game have anything to do with the trade?  I think so...  The Olline kept Cam clean the whole game and the receivers could not get get any separation against Tampa’s backup CBs.  Yes, Cam should have used check downs but there were not any chunk plays due to Funchess and Kelvin not getting any separation.

Kelvin has had plenty of opportunities to use his size as an advantage but never used it consistently. He played soft at times letting tiny CBs get leverage. He never seemed to fight for the ball. He has made some great plays but just too inconsistent for a #1 WR.

To be clear, the title doesn't matter,  but the play and impact upon the game does.

On an off note,  I picked up Samuel in fantasy yesterday,  but I dropped him today for Eddie Lacy. I had to choose between him and Adam Shaheen. Shepard ain't even a consideration.

Shepard has done well with the opportunities he's been given so far. An offense with Funchess, Shepard, Samuel/CMC, and a returning Olsen should be plenty if the o-line does their job

He(Shepard) has been open a ton, usually on a crossing route underneath, he just has rarely been targeted. Seems like he was killing it in TC but he has speed and the will, and hopefully the talent to step up. Cam needs to shake off the loss of KB and move on, it may be in the long run for the better.

He wasnt really a gadget player in college, he was Percy Harvin, he was a swiss army knife...that said the knock on him coming out of the NFL is that he was a jack of all trades master of none.

gadget probably isn't the best word....but like I said a hybrid RB/WR.    Which means in this O....he is ideally suited for what we have CMC already doing.

Samuel didn't line up and stretch defenses in college.  People think for some reason just having speed makes you that.   More goes into it....good DBs can handle just fast dudes that aren't great WRs.

If it's not Samuel, then we won't be going anywhere.

Sure,  Shepard will get the obligatory nod at the start,  but if Samuel doesn't eventually play himself into the role,  then we're toast.

I'm also thinking the same thing, and hope the coaches have realized it with trading Benji away . Samuel is the fastest WR we have on the roster and most likely the shiftiest , its just an X factor that teams haven't had to account for when playing the Panthers for quite some time . Give Samuel ample time on the outside, have him catch deep ball and be the deep threat to get the extra saftey and LBs out of the box and jump start our running game.

I agree Samuel is no where near a polished WR , but I think its something the staff at least has to explore trying to use him extensively on the outside to see if it opens up the offense any.  If it fails, well, at least you tried to do something different to solve a problem instead of doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.
