The Forgotten Portion of The KB Trade

Here is what people do not realize--KB was not a good fit for our offense.  Cam holds the ball so long waiting for him, he risks injury.  KB was a decent #1, but was not getting better (came to camp out of shape).  His rookie season was his best.  When he was sitting out, we won 15 games and lost 1 with Ted Ginn as the #1.

Was anyone paying attention to what teams were doing to us?  Count the players in the box--that is why we can't run.  We always faced 7 in the box--8 and even 9 at times.  They could cover KB with a S if they had to, a CB on Funchess, etc.  Now with Funchess, Samuel, Sheperd, and CMC, Cam gets the ball out quicker, we have more speed, and they have to respect the deep ball.  We will add a WR in the draft, but this will pay off this year---

We may lose 300 yards of receiving from our #1, but we add 100 to the slot and #2.  In addition, we run the ball better.  You will see.

i have a strange feeling this move will workout. Idk, no knee-jerk reaction from me on this

Huh?

Panthers were projected at $1.5 mil free cap for 2018 cap and are now projected around $10 mil with KB off the books.

There is no way on earth the Panthers could afford to sign Norwell AND Star with $1.5 mil in cap space. It can be done with $10 mil though.

Why exactly the Panthers pulled the trigger on the KB trade is complicated but I don't think enough attention is being paid to the $8.459 mil in cap space being saved next year.

So instead of choosing between Norwell and Star this offseason, the Panthers can now afford both.

Which combination would you rather have...?

  • KB and either Norwell or Star
  • Norwell, Star, and a 2018 3rd round pick

If I remember correctly Hurney broke into the organization as a cap manager so I think he could have his eyes on the future with this move.

I'd rather have KB and either Norwell and Star, absolutely. This forces our hand to go get a WR in the draft and every other team knows it.

Yeah I'm just going to hold my breath on this one we have to actually see how this team works out without him OK we can't be chicken a little right now we got to at least wait until we actually fail

We would save the exact same from KB if we released him after the season, or if we traded him after the season.

Exactly. We had our best season without him. Could that have been a fluke where everything just aligned? Maybe, or maybe the team is just oddly better without him for some reason. I think KB is talented but if defenses play us better with him slowing down the O or whatever, maybe its a good thing. Idk #keeppounding

Fair point. Only thing I can think of for that is the 5th year option becomes guaranteed if KB got hurt and maybe the organization had reservations about his knee.

Obligatory reminder that Steve Smith was in fact drafted before Hurney was the GM. Also, obligatory reminder of Hurney's WR draft picks as GM:

7a (226) @ WR Walter Young Illinois
2 (62) WR Keary Colbert Southern California
5 (163) WR Drew Carter Ohio State
2a (45) WR Dwayne Jarrett Southern California
4 (118) WR Ryne Robinson Miami (OH)
3a (78) WR Brandon LaFell Louisiana State
3b (89) ^ WR Armanti Edwards Appalachian State
6b (198) & WR David Gettis Baylor
5 (132) WR Kealoha Pilares Hawaii
4b (104) WR Joe Adams Arkansas

So, in 10 WR draft picks, including two 2nds, two 3rds and two 4ths, the best WR was Brandon LaFell. Ooh, let's get excited for the picks for KB, a WR who has played two seasons for us and in those two seasons, he had better years than any WR that Hurney ever drafted.

One other note, do you remember the 2010 1st round draft pick that our buddy Hurney threw away for Everette Brown? Well that pick 17 was 5 picks before Demaryius Thomas and 7 picks before Dez Bryant. I wonder if either of those two WRs would have been useful to us instead of picking LaFell and trading a future 2nd for Edwards in the same draft.

Obligatory reminder that Hurney sucks at drafting WRs and blew the best chance we had at getting two stud WRs that clearly would have helped us in the 2013 and 2015 playoffs.

I don't think most of these new Hurney supporters were around when all that went down.  Or it's selective memory.  Hurney sucks at pretty much everything except being JR's stooge.

But Hurney's only the interim GM.  Yeah, right.

Ok, now I'm thoroughly depressed.

Buffalo and Carolina are working together on this and future years. Buffalo takes the cap hit for Benjamin and pays him a sizeable check. If he pans out there, he stays and we move on. If he doesn't but still looks good to us, they'll trade him back for something they need.

Back in the Hurney's first tenure, we did this pretty much with Moose so he could get a big paycheck, spend a couple of years up north and then come back to us ready to play, some money in the bank and a reasonable sticker price on the return trip. We returned the favor by taking a high draft pick TE off their hands that they couldn't find a good use for. That one worked out pretty good for us, too, especially after Chicago cleaned house in their coaching and management, forgetting to ask for that guy back.

You guys still think the good ones are playing chess, rather than checkers. There are bigger games going on behind the scenes gaming the system than you could imagine.

Give it two years, KB, if he's still a viable player, will be back in Panthers' blue.

Webb, Clay, etc...  Two teams with management groups that are closely related, working in opposite conferences, close knit coaching groups, scouts that have worked together and looking to compete in divisions where they are the small market teams. If they do this right, both come out as winners. The draft day and salary cap flexibility potentials are amazing.
