Just A Thought...

So, I’ll even face the music and say McCaffrey has been disappointing in terms of the hype he was getting. While o-line play has been sub-par, he is missing lanes at times and doesn’t look comfortable as a runner. May as well be the NFL’s too fast for him as a runner.

However, he’s been exceptionally well as a receiver and someone who garners the attention of the defense. He’s been very productive from the slot with very good and precise route running.

If we were to convert him to more of an Edelmen-type role, I could see it working out amazingly well. Focusing as a receiver could easily land him as a 1000 yd a year slot guy with lots of potential.

While some argue that “oh hur dur a slot guy bahahah not worth an 8th,” I think it’s more than warranted given what he does for the offense, the attention he forces defenses to give him, and the reliability and skillset the Panthers need.

For this season, I’d love to see Samuel and CMC work more as receivers, with CMC in the slot and Samuel outside. I’d love to have Stewart and CAP be our RB tandem with the occasional CMC run to keep defenses on their toes.

What say you?

I was just talking about this exact same scenario earlier today with a fellow panthers fan. This would also get another weapon on the field in CAP. McCaffrey is simply not a HB. He would make a great full time slot WR. Also agree that we need to get Samuel involved in stretching the field.

You can't tout his yardage totals without acknowledging how many touches he's getting to get there. When you look at the touches to yardage ratio it's fairly pedestrian. 99 touches, 495 yards. That's not worth 8th overall on any planet. Especially when you're forcing it to him.

By comparison, Ted Ginn had 799 total yards on 101 touches in 2015.

We need to use him a little better, but he's also got to at times stop over thinking it and just move forward. You saw what happened when we put in CAP.

surprised no one has thought of this

Not suprised Rivera and Shula haven't thought of it though, speaking of which...

Apparently, RR has become so predictable that it's been four hours now, and no one has mentioned his presser today AFAIK. If you didn't catch it, you didn't miss anything.

I think that was sarcasm. ;)

Yeah, I know he was being sarcastic, but I damn sure wasn't. Relatively speaking, I don't know squat about football, but it doesn't take much more than common sense, paired with watching the games far too much, to see where, and how, this young man would excel. I've been calling him Edelman 2.0 since going to the Saints game.

I still firmly believe that when he went down, if CMC had been available for even a remotely good price, Belichick would have pounced on him, and furthermore, his numbers (receiving) would be substantially better on fewer targets. As it is, CMC is ahead of Amendola in yardage so far this year, and he's the one that the Pats pundits said would take up the slack. Don't you guys think he'd potentially be spectacular running McD's routes catching balls from Brady? I bet they'd coach him up on getting past the first arms and add some upper body strength too.

The draft is long over. We took him at eight. The right coaches and system could probably get number eight value out of him a lot sooner than it will happen here under the current regime.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
