Online Audio streaming changes

For years, I've sat in my local sports bar and watched the Carolina games ... But since the bar likes to put the Falcons TV audio on, I've been listening to game broadcasts via various apps.

The panthers app is geofenced to Carolina area users only. Can't use that.

Today, WBT geofenced their audio to exclude mobile devices (can listen via desktop, though)

has anyone come up with ways to listen to game audio that are reasonably accessible while not sitting at home but out of the normal Carolina listening area?

Yeah, VPN blah blah.  Geofencing is done to isolate radio streams to a particular market, so unless I can VPN to something with a Charlotte-centric address, that won't be a solution.

The thing that gets me is "what's the big deal" for the audio broadcast, to keep it away from mobile devices but still make it available to desktops.  Other than the fact that the radio advertisers aren't paying to have someone outside of the market who'll never user those services hear the ads.... so use different ads on the out-of-market listeners.

It's a hard way to alienate the fanbase who want to listen.

(I know it's not WBT's fault or the Panthers' fault, but really someone being short-sided on the NFL side)

I’m glad you brought this up. I ran into the very same thing today and was like WTF?? Luckily I got to watch into the 4th quarter. 

I’ll be doing some research and will hit you up if I come up with anything.

You obviously need jitterbug phone then and need not to deal with technology. 

VPNs allow you do to exactly that, to mask your geographic location and make it appear as another. 

Or you could pay $200+ for DirecTV's NFL package. 

Or drive to the Panthers market or stop being such a bitch that doesn't know what they are talking about before insulting somebody with knowledge on the subject that took their time to help you out.

Agree the “blah blah” comment was a little weird when you’re trying to help. Not being able to listen was frustrating when the game was on the line. 

I’ve used VPN’s off and on for about 10 years and from my experience, I’ve never found one that showed a Charlotte location specifically.  That’s why I was going to do some research. 

However, from the automated message I heard, it was basically a blackout for mobile phones. So atm, I’m not sure a VPN would work in this situation. 

Appreciate the feedback either way.

Phones data still works off location which is generated from the towers in which it communicates with. 

If you go airplane mode or use orbot/orfox you can mask your location. 

And further more if you take the time to look into this you can make the virtual location, the physical location you desire. 

I have to do work in NE NC, a lot. It's part of the Redskins market and have no problem working my way into a Panthers stream

If you have Apple, find "Pro Radio" on the appstore. Its the one with a football helmet. For 1.99, you get all 32 NFL teams home broadcasts plus the national ones. Been using for years since I usually have to work the first half of Panthers games (own sports bar).

 

Edit: The best Panthers stream is Broadcast #2. I dislike Mixon though and sometimes listen to opposing audiocasts.

The blah blah was more of a "VPN isn't the answer for everything, and I know/use VPNs for various reasons already" rather than meant to be a comment on the comment. Apologies

Don't want to pay for gamepass.

TuneIn/iHeart/etc all use the exact same stream provided by the station's streaming provider, and is typically their "out of market" experience based on IP address. (radio has the ability to insert different ads into the stream based on location). Whether you access the stream via a known method (like TuneIn) or some side piece where you get the raw AAC/MP3 connection rather than the interface doesn't matter - the stream is the stream is the stream.

      It's crazy how folks on the huddle can draft better than our highly paid scouts.  I know I saw several mocks with the first 3 selections going Ladd, Frazier and Wilson like the above post.  Heck, one of them may have been mine.  It seems that the scouts go into paralysis by analysis.  Ladd might not be the ideal weight or height, it's tabo to draft centers high, Wilson had past injuries.  All that said, those dudes just dominated at their respective positions. Our scouting department and Morgan need the K.I.S.S montra--keep it simple stupid. STOP overthinking it.

      This team has long had an allergy to the obvious pick. They take an XL and think they can coach him up to be the next megaton or DK. Brooks to be the next Peterson. Burns to be the next LT. They pick dudes and play them outside of their natural position. They draft for need, get desperate, pick the flawed guy, and the results speak for themselves. They go to the store jonesing for a ribeye, the store is sold out except for the ‘manager’s special’ … and end up with a toilet of puke later that night…  whereas the filet that was sitting right next to it got some other dude laid.  The obvious pick with no need of coaching up has done them pretty well. Moose. Peppers. Kuechly. Davis. Gross. Jenkins, etc.  Sometimes obvious is just obvious. Consistently missing on first and second rounders gets them exactly where they are. Loser teams, devoid of talent and a revolving door at head coach.  WR: Pick the guy who can catch the damn ball. DE: pick the guy who can play the run well. Pass rush is nice, but playing the run is better.  center: smart big guy who doesn’t miss assignments.  tackle: good pass protector first. Run blocker second. If you have a really good QB and receivers that can catch, the running game will open itself up by default.    It’s not THAT hard, right? Diamonds in the rough are usually only quartz. Stop picking up dudes whose flaw is THE primary skill required for their position, thinking that you’ve got some sort of magical staff. Go BPA with the healthy guy who just flat out gets it done better than anyone else still available…. Except for a RB or special teamer. Yes BPA is boring, but it stacks the team with legit talent.    That’s what I’m going to call their reaches from now on. The f-in manager’s special. Break out the cast iron griddle, Montreal steak seasoning, and some avocado oil.
