*Wonders how many former Panthers would it take to purchase the franchise.*

Just out of no where Smitty buys the franchise lol. I could just imagine the reaction from everybody. Would definitely make things interesting each and every season since you know he wouldn't EVER tolerate losing.

I wouldn't mind seeing a group involving him, Minter, Rucker and Moose.  I imagine none of them could afford an NFL franchise on their own

The Panthers are at an estimated 1.56 billion. The players you mentioned, they'd be lucky to pool 5% of what the team's worth. This takes hedge fund manager level money

Well Jerry only owns half the team so maybe they could scrounge 10%.

This news isnt shocking. The Richardson’s can not afford the estate taxes after JR passes so it makes sense he is involved in the search for a new ownership group to buy out his majority shares before he loses his faculties.

If Panthers ever were to leave I think I could easily divorce myself from the nfl

Before the Panthers ever came to fruition in the early 90’s I never really had a favorite team, much less followed the NFL but I followed them in the news as they were being born and attended a few games to watch them play in Clemson while Ericsson Stadium was being built and I got hooked.  In 2003 when I was finally able to afford it, I purchased PSL’s..... the very same seats that I sit in today.   If the franchise would ever leave then I would leave them.

The NFL is a dying sport.....no one knows what will happen in 5 years.

It is indeed, for many reasons.

The Chargers also can’t fill up an MLS Stadium, or close to it.  All threats at this point to relocate are TOOTHLESS!!!!!!!

And relocate to where?  San Diego and St Louis are broke as hell, and the Cowboys and Texans will NEVER allow a 3rd Texas team.

There are also far inferior markets and stadiums at this point still in the league than the Carolinas and BOA.

The mayoral candidates in Charlotte have already thrown the new stadium possibility out there as a reason the MLS Stadium wasn’t built.  It’s absolute insanity.  Hard to be more brain dead.

yeah, cuz you couldn't make that money back in a half season of PSLs....lol

Rounding off and ignoring the exemption, if JR owns half of the team worth 1.5 billion, that's 750 mil. Estate tax would then be 300 mil. To put it in perspective, that's about two years of cap money...not chump change. If he had wanted his kids to have it, he had the resources to do it. Options to at least minimize the tax were available. At his age, those are now more limited.

Edit: Forbes has September value at 2.3 billion with annual operating income at just over 100 million. Do the math on that one and you'll get an idea of why even the super rich fear death taxes as much as death itself.
