Context - Why Daryl Williams Supposedly Looks "Good" While Matt Kalil Sucks

This may just be a shot in the dark but oline is not a sexy position to play anymore. Everyone wants to be a star QB running back wide receiver. There just aren't enough quality guys to go around anymore.

Coaches in the lower levels have to win now, just like everything else in our lives these days....so they put the best players in positions to win, regardless of what comes next.

Also, it's much more fun to hit the QB than it is to protect him.  Some of the freaks that are playing DE, and DT, could have likely been T's and G's had they played there in college.

This. If you have that elite jumbo athlete he can do your team more good disrupting the other team's offense than he can blocking for your QB and/or RB who may not be worth a hill of beans.

While a bit long/tall, think about Peppers as a groomed OT...or Pierre Paul.  The athleticism is off the charts, but that's better used on the defensive side of the ball.  Plus it's more fun.

I’m pretty sure Matt Kalil sucks just because he sucks...regardless of what’s going on on the opposite side of the o-line.

About these statistics: it’s pretty common knowledge that the best pass rushers generally line up against the RT. Therefore it would make sense that he would often get chipped by an HB or TE to slow down the pass rush, which shows up as the RT getting “help”. Technically yes he is getting help, but I think it has less to do with his ability and more to do with the ability of the guy lined up against him. Based on this logic...I expect that RTs in general have a higher Help % than LTs, aside from obviously some exceptions like Taylor Lewan cause the Titans appear to just have a very helpful offense. It would be more useful to compare Daryl Williams’ help percentage to that of other RTs. I imagine that would bridge the gap a bit between his help percentage and that of the average RT, instead of the 9-10% difference according to that tweet. If it’s perhaps half of that (4.5-5%), I would consider that discrepancy fairly negligible.

Yep. Honestly, I think most of the elite DL could've also been elite OL.

Williams will have to be replaced at the end of the season with a better starter via the draft. Williams is very weak for his size, tires early, look sloppy like Bell, and run blocks like an old lady. Change is coming. We need an Otah at RT, not a Bell. We'll get one.

Hell, needs to be replaced now. Why wait till the end season? As a unit they cant get any worse.

I don't think any of them look good. And I don't think their helps looks good either. Sometimes you see 6-7 blockers vs. 3 pass rushers and somebody still gets through...

That's a schematic problem.  But we don't have those.  Just execution issues.

If you have that sitiation it's no doubt an execution issue. I get the frustration with coaching but let's not be silly.

If you have 6 or 7 guys to block 3 and still can't get the play off it's a scheme problem period.  The play is garbage because you have 8 defenders covering your 4 or 5 options.  That my friend is destined to fail.  Your scheme sucks and you deserve all the criticism that comes with it.

But what you are implying is that those 6 or 7 guys should be able to hold off the 3 long enough to allow 4 on 8 to produce an open guy.   Yeah that is an execution problem because it is nearly impossible to execute successfully.

good OCs can consistently scheme around subpar players. matt kalil's wildly inconsistent performance is a reflection of a poor coordinator.

Honestly every offensive players consistently sucks and Shula is why. The only player I can think of that was totally consistent under Shula was Olsen. Even Cam is wildy inconsistent.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
