Explain how that works in the ultimate meritocracy, known as Football?

Isnt this the,” what have you done for me lately,” league?

it depends on the team. some are a lot more comfortable with an old stake stats quo (consistency).

Agreed but usually that means "perceived" excellence has been achieved.

Jeff Fisher is an anomaly that can’t be explained.

fixed, remember, rivera and shula don't see that they are doing anything wrong with play calling and game management. it's all about perception.

and yes....jeff fisher's ability to keep a job for so long was indeed a mystery.

What puzzles me is why owners and GM's (esp GM's) allow HC's to make poor to questionable coordinator hires.

Well actually I can not even understand why HC's do it as their job is on the line as well. In my opinion coordinators are more important anyways. You take two play calling savants and they will make any HC look good. Maybe it has to do with repaying debts idk. That is actually part of what makes a HC good. Putting together a group of the best coaches you can.

Nonetheless, I would not allow it if I was an owner or GM. I would tell the HC in the interview process you got to hire the best option available. Non negotiable.

Most people are bad at their jobs and only stay employed and get promoted through connections/friendships. Networking is the single most important aspect of being successful for the vast majority of the work force. Thats how the world works.

Haven't watched a Panthers game in weeks. Tell Jerry to get a better product. That is also how the world works.

Most professional sports are exactly this way. Most franchises would rather go with an experienced coach or GM they know to be below average to average rather than taking a chance at hiring someone with little experience and high potential. It's an old boys' club.

I blame the fans. They keep watching a crappy product. You don't owe these teams anything.

Stop going to games. Stop watching them on TV.

We would have a better league for it.

In no way would I ever classify RR and MS as excellent.  This team wins in spite of not because of those two.

I guess it’s teams with franchise QBs that tend to have the same head coach for awhile.
