Is Ron Rivera a good head coach?

Not sure what has changed in the last 7 seasons for you guys to NOW realize this.

Ron’s been this same guy since day 1

I'd like to chime and officially say he's not a good head coach. But to your post, I thought a lot of us were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that things like clock management and when to use timeouts would be something he would learn over time since he had never been a head coach at any level until he got there. But they haven't gotten better, if anything, they've gotten worse. There has been zero improvement from Ron Rivera on gamedays that I can see compared to when he got here in 2011.

Apparently you can't make polls anymore, so reply to this thread with your answer and I'll tally after 24 hours.

Ron is a subpar coach.  Always has been.

Riverboat a slightly above average coach.

The Ron Rivera we met in his initial press conference would have been a phenomenal head coach.

Unfortunately, that guy disappeared and was replaced with the Ron Rivera that we have now.

Idk, the Riverboat persona was actually a competent head coach.

unfortunately he’s been dead for about 4 years now

He’s honestly just not very smart.

You get a sense he doesn’t have much of a clue when he speaks then he proves it with his actions.

He just doesn’t get “it”, hasn’t from day 1 and isn’t smart enough to take a step back and think to himself “I need to change”.

He and Shula have been carried by Cam for far too long and they’ve wasted a good portion of Cam’s career by keeping both guys.

Richardson created Riverboat Ron. Ron had nothing to do with the creation of that persona.

Rivera took nothing away from that. He saw it as something he was forced to do and unless in that exact same situation again, that guy isn’t coming back.

Ron, sadly, has proven to be that manager that everyone at work likes and can talk to about any problem. In the first year or two, there's a big upswell in morale and that helps. But then three, four years down the road, things start to run down and because of those relationships, he can't go in and crack the whip to get everyone straightened out when they start coasting and crashing.

No.

Ron has the same shortcomings as a Head Coach as he did 7 seasons ago. Horrible game management, questionable loyalty to veteran players with clearly younger/better options behind them, plain outdated thinking about the current game of football, and a stubbornness that allows for no change that goes against his conservative nature.

I had hoped with experience to see some growth, but the only time he's grown a pair has been with his ass on the line.

I'm tired of watching his unprepared teams play without any emotion. This team mirrors his stoic personality with their lackadaisical play far too often.

It's time to end the Rivera tenure. I just wish I had any faith in ownership or the GM to find a competent replacement.

He's been an NFL position coach or coordinator or head coach for 18 years, you don't manage to do that if you're not smart, so I couldn't disagree with you more there. But he's not the *right* kind of smart for what you need in a head coach. I was a high school valedictorian and I'm very smart, but there are different skills and situations where I'm just not good at all.

By the way, I really wish I didn't have to make this thread. Ron Rivera seems like an incredible guy with a great family that I enjoy following on social media. It makes me icky having to call him out like this. His involvement in this community makes Charlotte better. But he doesn't need to be our head coach anymore.

He needs to take over the defense and hire the best OC he can find. It's not hard.

Why more HC's don't do this? They're lazy that's why. Just cause you a HC, you just let your coordinators do all the work while you just implement a philosophy? Nah

If we get a HC that's offensive, make sure he call the plays and hire the best defensive DC he can find.
