Are the Panthers the next Chargers?

Everyone knew that they had a talented roster: Tomlinson, Rivers, Sproles, Gates, VJax, Merrimen, Weddle, Cromartie. Everyone also knew that AJ Smith and Norv Turner needed to go by 2010 (if not sooner), yet they weren't fired until 2012. The Chargers still haven't recovered. Even with that, the Chargers only had two losing seasons under AJ Smith, his first and his last. Hurney had 5 losing seasons and Rivera has already had 4. Is JR going to let Hurney and Rivera waste our current core group of players and ruin the franchise for the next decade?

No.  At one point, the Chargers fired a very successful, winning coach (Schottenheimer) following a 14-2 season and playoff appearance.  We've only had 4 coaches and 3 GMs over 22 years, and still havent had back to back winning seasons, because we don't expect any more.

If you mean changing coaching staffs every couple years or every time your QB has a bad game. No not yet but give it time. I mean people are wanting Norv Turner as our OC, I mean that worked for the Chargers.

1TD - 8ints in 3 losses, can you believe the coaching:eyeroll:

It's sad to say but this team might benefit more in the long run if they totally collapse. It would send a message to JR that he made a mistake with David and not firing Hurney. Any success this year translates to the coaching staff/GM staying at least two more years.

There are some distinct differences to how the teams are run, but in essence, you could be onto something.  The Chargers wasted a HOF caliber QB in Rivers by being cheap, and mismanaged.

We are wasting a HOF caliber QB's career by continuing to trot out below average coaches...not necessarily teams.

The Chargers allowed a glut of talent to leave after Rivers' first couple years there, and then started drafting poorly...they seem to be a bit better now, but still not great.

IMO Carolina has had talent all through Cam's career, we just haven't had the coaching to use the talent effectively.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
