Panthers Are Tops In The NFL With Something Special Teams Related. This Is Not A Joke.

Woah. That's not something you hear everyday.

The Carolina Panthers Special Teams are one of the best in the NFL at something. Surprisingly, it's not penalties.

The Panthers coverage unit as a whole has been one of the best in the NFL.

In terms of total yardage allowed on returns, the Panthers have allowed a very small number on both kickoffs and punts.

In six punts returned by opponents, the Panthers have only allowed a total of 29 yards. That’s the second-fewest total punt return yards allowed by a team in the league through six weeks. Only the 49ers have allowed fewer yards, giving up just 24 yards on 14 return attempts.

To put that number into a bit more context, Michael Palardy has punted 21 times in six games. With only six of them being fielded, that’s a credit to the Panthers’ coverage unit and to Palardy, himself, who is averaging almost 45 yards per punt. Eight of his punts have been fair caught, six have landed inside the 20 and only two have gone for touchbacks.

As far as kickoffs go, no team has allowed fewer total yards to this point on kickoff returns than the 45 the Panthers have allowed.

So, Panthers are 2nd best against punt returns and tops against kickoffs. Now, credit is certainly due to Gano and Palardy for being decent at their jobs and making life harder for the returners. However, still something pretty cool.

Kickoff numbers don't mean poo since we kick for the touchback instead if the high angle to force a return, but the bunt #s are good

Id rather them start on the 25 everytime than than have them start <25 and then have a big return fir a TD every so often

I understand this point of view, but there is another side to this.

How often do you see returners fumble the ball? I would bet it is far more common than kick off returns for a TD. No chance of that with touchbacks.

Only 7 teams have a return average of more than 25 yards.  And since most kicks go at least a couple of yards into the end zone, only a couple of teams have an actual average starting field position beyond the 25. So many more times than not, the opposing team would have a worse starting position if we had returnable kickoffs.

But RR is risk averse so we will keep doing what we do.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
