In Hindsight, Still Think Keeping Gano over Butker was a Huge Mistake.

gano is fine until proven otherwise

Agreed. However, we shouldn't be settling for "fine" nor paying "great" money to a "fine" player. Not saying Butker is great, he's looked solid but yet to be seen how good he actually is, but he is definitely cheaper. I think we made the wrong decision but ultimately not that big of a deal. The Lee/Palardy choice on the other hand....

Ron made the call on Gano over Butker.  Then same guy doesn't allow Gano to kick 50yd FG due to crosswinds.

Whether it was simply lack of faith, possible protection from criticism when Gano missed that FG or both, those are bad reasons to not make what most would call the right decision there.

Why is this even a topic? There is no way to change what happened. Gano is kicking great (minus 1 PAT and a 55 yarder). Made a game winning kick against the defending Super Bowl Champs, and his kickoffs are still some of the best (29 out of 31 for touch backs vs 23 out of 27 for Butker).

I honestly have no idea what some of you expect out a kicker. I know fully well that some of you will say "I don't want to be nervous every time he kicks." Well, honestly that is on you. Inside 50 he has been money this year.

Let's be honest, the saddest part of this thread is we are discussing a kicker like it's life or death for this team.   Because it is.     And it's sad we have a coaching staff that lives and dies by the field goal.     I wish we had a team where field goal discussions aren't daily because it's not a 'every week' thing but it's been like that for years and years under River and Fox before that.

Once again, Hurney with almost no understanding of the cap, when players are or aren't under contract, and sticking with a vet a year or two too long.

We had Butker signed to a 4 year deal worth a maximum of $2.4 million.  His cap hit this year would be 485k, and next year would be 575k.

Nope, let's keep Gano, who is much older, has some confidence issues, and was coming off a poor season.

Ah, and to add insult to injury, Gano is a free agent after this season, and counts $4 million against the cap this season alone.

We get 4 years of a young kicker for 2.4M, or 1 year of an old kicker for 4M....then we get to either sign Gano to yet another extension for more money, or draft or acquire another kicker in the offseason.

Hurney and Ron make some of the most boneheaded personnel moves I have ever seen.

It’s easy to say this in hindsight, but keep in mind that Butker was missing numerous kicks in practice/camp and was clearly outplayed by Gano. You’re acting like it should’ve been such an easy decision at the time (younger, cheaper, etc.) while neglecting his camp performance.

Now where I do have issue with the Panthers was their limited use of him in preseason. He attempted what, 1? 2 field goals? If your kicker struggled last year and you just spent a draft pick on one, I’d sure as hell be eager to give him as many opportunities as possible to see what he’s got.

How can you be clearly outplayed by someone if you don't even get a chance? There was no competition because the coaches already had their mind made up before training camp.

And no, this is not a "hindsight is 20/20" situation. Pretty much everybody wanted to keep Butker over Gano because, like you said, he was cheaper and younger. It was an easy decision then and it would still be an easy decision now if we had to do it again. Not to mention the dumbass decision to keep Palardy over Lee.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
