In Hindsight, Still Think Keeping Gano over Butker was a Huge Mistake.

Our running game is averaging like 1 yard a carry and we are discussing the kicking game

So comment on a running thread. Oh wait we should only discuss whatever is on your mind at this moment? Didn't see that disclaimer when I signed up for this site...

He's 30 years old.

He'll be playing for another 10+ years.  Stop with the age bs.

As far as his contract, it is what the market dictates. You have to pay the market value for a veteran player.

Whether you car to admit it or not, Gano is better than than what the majority of the NFL teams have.

Is he older than Butker?

My point stands

Except that if he made the EP which was at a time in the game when we had a comfortable lead, we don't need to make a long FG to win it. Against the Pats away. The one team you don't want to give extra opportunities to late in the game. You are cherry-picking your narrative. Lauding him for being clutch after putting himself in the position in the first place. He made the difficult kick after missing the easy one and that is exactly the point.

Look i hope he makes every kick this year. I don't hate Gano. Ultimately I want us to win. And yes it is a done deal. But I'm not a blind homer when it comes to assessing our players. We drafted a rookie who Is playing great for one of the best teams in the NFL.The difference is they showed faith in a rookie where we just flip-flopped. If you just wanted a kicking competition in camp why are you even drafting him? Just bring in an UDFA to miss then cut him.

The cap may or may not make any difference when the re-signings come round. But being as its tight, will you feel so great about letting Butker go if we lose Star or Norwell as looks likely?

A kicker won't stop us from either those contracts.

I don't understand all of the hate for him, and yes there were plenty of times were I've said wtf from him missing a FG, but he has proven to be a quality starter in the league and a lot of fans forget he was clutch for us in the 2015 season and a reason why we were undefeated before ATL. I say give him this season to prove that last year was just a fluke. 2016 started off bad once he missed that game winner in Denver and then he started to get into a funk and began to miss a bunch of FGs. He was also playing with an broken plant foot towards the end of the season which could've messed with his technique. But 2016 was a $hitty season for almost everyone on this team not just him.

His age shouldn't even be a concern. Adam Vinatieri is 44 playing at an exceptional level. Not saying every kicker is Vinatieri, just saying he has the potential to play in this league for another 10 years.

I believe this is his contract year and other than a missed xp and a 55yd FG that should've been flagged, he has been serviceable for this team so far. He is also reliable when it comes to touchbacks on kickoffs, and anyone who pays attention should know our kickoff team has been sketchy for years.

There's a lot of football left but Rivera needs to stop holding back and give Gano more chances to decide his faith with this team. Not believing in your kicker and just protecting him from kicking anything 50+ or a 58yd FG right before the half and attempting a weak ass attempt at a hail mary not only makes Rivera look like a dumbass coach, it's going to mess with Gano's confidence.

Also Butker may be more athletic but that really doesn't mean crap if you're not willing or too afraid to make a hit on a NFL player like our boy Gano...

Yeah, it's easy to see the mistake but you have some huddlers here that are happy with Gano. Not gonna name names but they know and we know who they are. Kid is killing it. Should have gone young in the kicking department but oh well. Lost a 7th round pick and a lock kicker for the next couple of decades. B-b-b-but Gano is good guys!

I think it's a bit too early to proclaim that Buttkicker will be something "special".  Gano has kicked very well this year. In the controversial no field goal attempts this year, where a different kicker could have played a roll in the season.  I don't see RR allow Buttkicker to kick the ones he didn't let Gano kick. Also, with Buttkicker, he was a built in excuse, "...didn't want to put a rookie in that position..."

Nonetheless, I wish Buttkicker nothing but the best. I always like an Andy Reid coached team and he landed in a great place.

Meanwhike, eagles let their rookie kick a 61 yarder for the win and don't even Second guess it haha

I love the way you miss the point or deflect everything i say. I said it may or may not have a knock on effect. Either way I am absolutely certain you don't know what they're asking or what the Panthers are offering and what the difference is. And even if it isn't the difference in re-signing them, the point is it is a cumulative effect. If you always take the overpaid veteran ahead of the rookie sooner or later down the road it pushes out a veteran who is actually more worthwhile because his contract simply comes up later.

I agree that on the face of things there is little difference between their level of play-they're both playing well. And clearly one bad moment from Butker or Gano doesn't define either. But looking at the big picture there wouldn't have been a big drop off from keeping Butker. Clearly RR doesn't like the idea of long FG attempts anyway. You can make a case for any player not getting cut but I can think of players I want to keep more than Gano.

I can understand being happy with Gano, he has been good so far this season.  Could have saved about 3 mil or so a year for the next 4 years though (Gano's contract is up at the end of the year).  With the production near identical, that's tough to justify currently.

One thing is for sure though, you're paying a kicker 4 mil per year, you need to start letting him kick from 50+.

Even though Cano has hit almost everything his year, I still cringe when he steps up to kick.

I probably would do that with butler too, but probably not as much.

I do know that it would be nice to not have to worry about who was going to be kicking for us every year or two. We  should have looked long term.

Oh well.

We've missed consistency since Kasay, and Gano is still unreliable despite a strong showing so far this year.  I hadn't kept up with Butker since his first game with KC until tonight...  he is a rookie, has made 11 straight attempts and just drilled a 53 yarder right down the middle, and again, he's younger and cheaper than Gano.  I know, no use in crying over spilled milk, but Hurney screwed up here.

why do I think this will be a frequent comment in the future?

Yeah sure he's been pretty good this season so far but we have a coach that won't even allow him to attempt 50+ yarders anymore.. that's embarrassing.

Has more to do with the type coach Ron consistently is than Gano.  Fox adopted not to let Kasay kick for a punt too at times

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
