On Christian McCaffrey - On The Cusp Of A Big Play?

Alot of our run plays are are trying to trick the other team. If it works it looks good , but if the D stay home or in there lane the play is dead.  ( see read op, revs, pa dubble screens, lots of shotgun run plays)  l dont thnk the RBs are being set up to succeed.

As much as you no one wants to admit it.. He isn't producing near the level we would want at number 8. Looking at the comparison to Fournette whom A lot of us wanted and it isn't even close. I would even say a healthy Davin cook was better.. Not to say all is lost on CMC..He is on a record breaking pace as far as catches go for a rookie.. i'm not sure he will ever be a between the tackles runner he goes down far to easy on  contact..but he is at worse a decent slot receiver...we get quality reps from him on special teams.. and he is a nightmare out of the backfield on passing downs. He is not the future to replace stew..he isn't even as good as deangelo the later years...I hope i'm wrong but this doesn't look like the value pick we wanted at 8.

He’s an excellent football player, just not an excellent running back (as he struggles with the main job description) — he’ll be useful, but it remains to be seen if he’ll provide necessary value at #8. Some people would rather throw stones at everyone else on the roster or staff instead of (already) face the prospect of a top 10 reach, especially given he was such a stud in college.

On Saca312 - On The Cusp Of Another Overly Optimistic Hype Thread?

But seriously, the fact that CMC could still produce despite a non-existent running game bodes well if we can figure out how to improve the overall running game. Unfortunately, that's a huge if.

Just saw a stat on Twitter. CMC's yards per touch higher than LF.

Haven't verified the info, but if true, it's interesting.

Knew this thread was coming soon as that Fournette praise thread was made lol.

CMC has been a decent receiver. RB, not so much

The fournette thread didn't need to be made though. He wasn't there when we drafted and we tried to trade up for him. It's not like they chose CMC over him

Vernon Davis’s yards per touch is more than 3x McCaffrey’s. Means he plays a different position / has a different usage rate, that’s all.

One would expect a ‘slot receiver' to outgain a bell-cow back on a per touch basis, anyways.

Why do people keep bringing up Fournette when discussing CMC?

Yes, CMC hasn't done what many of us want him to be doing.....yet...but I still don't see another player that was available when we drafted that would have helped us win more games than what CMC has.

Are there better positions to spend top 10 picks on?  Yes.

Were there many options available that would have quickly benefited this offense more than CMC?  Not that I can tell.

Panthers #2 overall, "most successful when running a man-blocking scheme this season, as they average 2.42 yards before contact on these runs, third-highest in the league."

Though PFF is by no means perfect, it seems more likely that there is some other piston that isn't firing. Stewart is in his 10th season, ancient for a tailback, and McCaffrey simply isn't producing as expected, even if (as the OP is doing) you redefine "missing catches/getting tackled/otherwise failing to make a play" as "bad luck."

A Stewart replacement is a must in the draft or FA next summer for the Panthers, IMO. McCaffrey is already a good receiver/gadget player, and will likely become great. But he can't be counted on to run between the tackles ~20x per game.

#2 in the league? Ehhhh, that's far too kind.

I think there are a number of factors contributing to our run game woes, bad play design and poor play calling are at the top of the list right behind what continues to be an inconsistent OL. This has been the same story the last 6 years, and it is getting old. At the end of the day even with a subpar OL, your OC still has to figure out how to adequately put his skill players in positions to succeed. These runs up the gut on just about every first down followed by even more headscratching calls on second and third down are what is really killing us.
