Can't even replace the production of a 32 year old Steve Smith

You can't just snap your fingers, and replace 89.

Beyond that discussion. I've gotta be honest, fair or not, we have to start getting real production out of CMC. We used an 8th overall pick on a running back, and Cam had to throw the ball 50+ times on a recovering shoulder while leading the team in rushing. In what universe is this acceptable?

He'll never justify being 8th overall or even a 1st rounder .. it's clear watching his play that he doesn't have the extra gear

I'm not ready to jump to those conclusions regarding CMC. It's too early.

But the fact is, I don't know if Rivera, and Shula even know how to properly utilize talent instead of merely getting by on it. Cam Newton is the only reason either of them still have jobs. Let's just lay that out there right now. It starts there.

has McCaffrey even legitimately had a chance to show his top gear?  He normally is bottled up in traffic juking and jiving.

I mean he isn't Tyreek Hill.  He doesn't have that gear nor was that sold to people.

McCaffrey doesn't do anything excellent. He isn't extremely fast. He isn't powerful.

doesn't do anything excellent?  Then why are opponents overplaying and schemeing the heck out of their D to focus on him.  No RB in the NFL runs routes as well as a rookie verison of McCaffrey.  He does that excellent and that is HUGE in the NFL.   You ever notice how some WRs are WIDEOPEN all the time and some super fast dudes always seem blanketed?

McCaffrey's vision and route running are crazy good.  Some people expected an All Pro production out of the gat.e

Based on the deficiencies of this team, why is OP worried about wide receivers?

well it all relates.  Lack of vertical threat impacts what imposing Ds do....which creates problems for other players in different aspects.

You can't argue against adding a freak WR to our team. Everyone wants that. If we have the opportunity we'll draft or acquire one assuming it makes sense money wise.

We'd all love to have Smith in his prime playing with Cam.

What we actually need more than anything is to upgrade our o-line. If you want to talk about the past, then I'd love to have a Jordan Gross at LT, and Jeff Otah at RT. Otah was the best run blocking RT I've ever seen, and Gross was the best offensive lineman in Panthers history. Stewart and Williams basically looked like living gods running behind Otah, and looked average when he was injured.

Cam has weapons all over the field. Even with Greg injured he's throwing to very good weapons. The problem we're facing now is the exact same problem the Panthers have always faced, even during the Fox era, is that teams with freakishly powerful d-lines (Eagles) stuff the run and force us to throw too much. If you want to know which teams will give ANY Panthers team trouble, then just look at the d-line. We're runty at OC, and our o-line is average overall power wise. And there is another factor involved that is killing our team. For whatever reason, there are run plays where several offensive linemen will totally miss there blocks as though they have no idea what is happening. Like they all chugged hard liquor in the huddle and came out rip roaring drunk and clueless. We usually lose 5 yards when this happens, and it happens way too often. Our o-line is not that bright, and not on the high end power wise. Hell each of our offensive linemen have turned into rag dolls at different times.

So more than anything the o-line needs a makeover. They're killing us against teams with nasty d-lines, and it's the nasty d-lines you have to deal with if you want to advance in the playoffs. Those are the teams barring our way to the SB.
