Something to consider before watching today's games

In a couple of hours, Sunday football will start and 24 teams will take to the field. Of those 24 teams, only five teams really have no hope of getting to the playoffs this year: Cleveland (as always), San Francisco (since Harbaugh was shown the door), the shamefully bad New York Giants, the wishing they were back in San Diego Chargers and the snakebitten Chicago Bears (who at 1-4 and with a new QB might, might have a mote of a chance).

Everyone else still has a seat at the table at this point. Even Cincinnati, Miami, Houston, Washington, Arizona, Tampa Bay, the walking wounded of Oakland/Las Vegas and the Saints have a shot with only two wins to each of their names. And Monday night will feature a snoozefest between the hapless Titans and the luckless Colts. Each of these basically lousy teams is fighting to stay viable after this week and, barring a tie, half of them will achieve it. Their fans will cheer and their coaches will get a good night's sleep for once.

And here we sit at 4-2 and you motherhuggers and just wailing and gnashing your teeth. Some of you are screaming for the coaches to be hanged in the streets and others calling for RBs, QBs, linemen, DBs and safeties to be fired and given their walking papers. 

We're 4-2. Yeah, we did just lose. We lost to a very good Eagles team in a close fought game on a short week. It happens. It happens to good teams. And teams like the two you saw play on Thursday night often meet again in the playoffs. And the result will be different next time. We couldn't run. We couldn't stop the run. We had turnovers. We went timid a couple of times instead of pushing to score. It happens and good teams grow past that.

We're a good team. We've got great players. We've got a coaching staff that has taken us regularly to the playoffs and once to the Superb Owl. The vast majority of teams in the league wish they were more like us (look at Buffalo basically attempting to clone this team and organization). 

We're going to make it. And dang it, cheer for the team -- waterboys, practice squaders, bench sitters, starters, coaches and ownership, all the way up. Otherwise, you're just missing out on a winning team and a historic year in the making. And win or lose, we only have so many seasons in our lives to watch the Panthers play ... quit pouring vinegar all over it and souring it for the rest of us.

Look, I get it. There's a kid who is crying in every toy store. Quit being that person ... your endless wheedling and complaining is getting old. Criticism is one thing, but if your incontinent bowels have to be emptied at every sign of a mistake either go see a doctor or take your loaded diaper to the Patriots, Cowboys or Broncos. Please.

It's funny to see people talk about the "shamefully bad" Giants.

Just a season ago people were praising them for going all out and spending big money on free agents to win the Super Bowl.

In the end, they didn't even win a playoff game, and now they look awful.

There are a few teams that have had success going all in for one season, but for there are far more that have failed and wound up in long periods of mediocrity as a price.

It's just not wise.

But, I get why the Giants did it. They know Eli is on the tail end of his career, so why not make one more big push? It's gonna be rebuild time soon one way or the other unless they luck into another franchise QB.

There's a good example of this every year yet most still think it's the way to go

Yeah, you're right. Everyone talks about a dream team in the NFL, but it never plays out that way and attempting it usually cripples a team for three to five years. It's not the NBA where you can gather up a handful of star players, pay them whatever they want and make a run for the rings.
