We evaluate, we don't second guess.

evaluate....that's what you do before and after the fact.

second guess is what you do in action.

so basically he's saying, "we're going to do what we set out to do without making any adjustments and then evaluate afterwards."

sounds like a formula for successfully throwing away any chance at being a really dominant team.

Wow you are really taking some liberties with this one...how is evaluating only done before and after the fact? I see evaluating as more of a constant and fluid action. What would you call Cam audibling on the field because he sees something in the defense? Personally I would say he gets to the line, “evaluates” the defense’s formation, and reacts...is that not fair to say?

If we’re going to be reading into every word the coaching staff says, since that seems to be the fun thing to do nowadays...here’s my take:

Out of the terms “evaluate” and “second-guess”, I would say the latter is the more inherently negative word. I would think most professionals in any field would prefer not to be “second-guessing” themselves at what they are being paid to do...what they are considered “experts” at. You can argue all you want that Shula is not an expert and is terrible at his job, but he is still a professional and should not be constantly second-guessing himself. Evaluation means you’re looking at the good and the bad...seeing what works and what doesn’t...then proceeding from there. Second-guessing implies only looking at the bad, only looking at what didn’t work. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d rather we watch all the tape and take the good and the bad - keep the stuff that worked, throw out the stuff that didn’t.

Bottom line, if you hate Shula then everything he says is going to irrationally irritate you. I would hate to be one of these guys in the public eye where every word is being dissected, scrutinized, and misconstrued. Then again, all of the above is my opinion...I don’t present it as fact like many do around here.

Yeah Mike, the problem is we already evaluated a lot of this S. You've been a coach for 3 decades. Three low % passes at end of game doesn't require evaluation. It should have never happened.

Stewart catching a screen pass with Samuel as his lead blocker.... You didn't already evaluate that Stewart struggles to catch and Samuel weighs 180lbs?

Stretch runs with Stewart? Devin Funchess lead blocking for him?

You need a psychiatric evaluation.

Cam evaluates when he gets to the line. If he's run the same play earlier and it completely failed, then he can second guess the call and audible out. That's part of his job as QB. Manning was probably the best ever at doing that.

Shula should be doing the same thing. After a play doesn't work 3 times, he should second-guess using that same play again. But that would require in-game adjustments and we all know he doesn't do that. They stick to a plan whether it's working or not.

I would think that part of his job is to determine whether or not a play is still going to work or if it should be scrapped for the rest of the game. Second-guessing yourself is not necessarily a bad thing, but you have to do it if you are going to grow as a coach or a player.

I think second-guessing is done in game and evaluations are done out of game when you have more time to analyze what actually happened. We all know Ron and Shula don't make in-game adjustments very often. They evaluate after the game when it's too late to do anything about it.

Mike Shula on his play calling per Joe P.

Whenever I see a guy respond to a question, or counter an assertion, by resorting to semantics, more often than not, that tells me he's boxed into a corner, and I know I have him nailed. In other words, no need to try and figure out what he meant by the distinction, because in such cases, there really isn't one...not in this one anyway.

    • My issue too is form Icky to Hunt you would have had young studs under contract control for the next 3 years, unreal if you have that on a NFL team.
    • I maybe huffin the hopuim too much for the defense during 2 games winning.   If DJ played like that each game(??), DBrown, Turlte, ARob(who's been like Dbrown), clowny   That's a solid front 5, or is it too much homer huffin??   Then Jewell and Shaq   Again solid, not trash or elite.   Horn(heathly) Mike Jackson. Dane Jackson, Woods, and Fuller   I swear the "solid" enough feels are here again   Of course Id love to drop a elite edge and have DJ come off the bench or another stud CB, but I swear if that group was 100% healthy I feel they'd be around 18th best. (yes still need a true NT).  Please correct me.
    • You are probably right, but as long as he goes to Dallas, and not here, it will be fun to watch.  Or better yet, New Orleans.
