Next gen stats - our run blocking is atrocious, Stewart and Mccaffrey are disappointments

Even looking back at the draft from today, I'm still not sure who would have been a better pick at 8. But I'm agreeing so far, McCaffrey is no where near worth #8 so far. If we were dead set on drafting  a RB of the future we shoulda traded up for Fournette or traded down for Cook. You can't really say anything about Hunt since no one expected him to explode like that. McCaffrey isn't an NFL running back, hes a WR who maybe should be in the backfield occasionally for tosses , trick plays , or end arounds, but should see most of his time in slot or out wide where hes actually somewhat resepctable.

I'm pretty sure Fournette is a top 5 rusher that fits our style better. Shula decided what was working shouldn't work anymore and poo the bed last night as he usually does. I was a Cook advocate, and he probably wouldn't have gotten hurt here b/c he wouldn't have played on that bullshit turf. What's worse is drafting a player like CMC and using him to block and run up the middle. Shula must have somebody by the balls as to why he hasn't gotten fired yet.

Kinda hard to run when you're met two yards deep in the backfield.  Just saying.

I agree. I don't think AP in his prime would have much luck running behind our current line.

It's obvious that Tyler Larsen isn't a dominant force up front at Center. Even when Ryan Khalil was healthy we struggled to consistently open holes for our backs. He's isn't getting any younger and is starting to have trouble staying healthy. We need to start looking for his eventual successor at the center spot.

I think we have a hard time sealing off the edges on off tackle and end runs. I don't think either of our current tackles are ideally suited for a power running game.

I'm with you, man.  Everyone still thinks the Panthers are a power running team, but that isn't true at all.  Cam has consistently masked the deficiencies in the run game.  Another thing that gets me is how highly regarded the interior (Norwell, Kalil, Turner) of our line is, and yet, we can't run the ball for poo.  Something doesn't add up.

We just picked Hall so that should develop into something next year, Luke should be good but another LB will be great. Panthers are a run first team and if you can run the ball you have better defense.

Top priorites:

1: TE

2: S/RB

3: DE

4: OL

1. Olsen is coming back later this season. And, with the way Dickson is playing, I don't think acquiring a TE is the teams top offseason priority.

2. Definitely agree on the S. If the OL continues to block like this I don't think any back is going to have a lot of room to run. The play needs to be improved or the talent has to be upgraded.

3. We've got Mario Addison under contract. Hall should be getting more playing time by next season. Peppers signed a two year deal (I think) and is still playing well. I know we need a DE, but right now our CB situation is worse than our end situation.

4. See #2

Way too early to say what CMC is, especially with the OLine they have currently. Stewart looks like the typical 30 year old RB. I'm a Falcons fan, not exactly rooting for the panthers and even I'm going, "WTF, why are they doing that?" every time they gave Stewart the ball.

Wouldn't read too much into this one game. Eagles have a good Dline, they're going to give lots of offenses trouble.

I feel the same way about the interior line. I don't see these guys blowing people off of the line when we call our running plays.

Trai already has a big contract. He isn't even 25 years.  I doubt he's even reached his prime. I can see building around him.

Ryan is getting older and more injury prone. We've got to find a replacement at Center even if he decides to return next year, which isn't a lock given his health.

Norwell will be a FA this offseason. He's been a solid player, but I don't think his run blocking is irreplaceable. If I saw a solid run blocking LG in the draft or an affordable FA in the offseason, I'd strongly consider making a move.  I wouldn't break the bank to retain him.

Good points. I enjoyed watching the Eagles DL play last night even though I'm Panthers fan.

Tbh, I have been hesitant to speak on him because a lot of fans lash out as they dont want to hear the truth as it is...  he has bren VERY underwhelming and disappointing.  Preseason he looked really promising, but as soon as the live rounds started flying, he has looked pretty horrible.  I never thought he was going to be Shady McCoy,  i just never saw that same level of quickness, but i thought he had a chance to be the best RB of this class...  i was excited about his potential.  Not so much now...  he appears to be a pretty good receiver,  but is a very weak RB.  Even his returning has bren extremwly underwhelming.  I think it's time to stop tip-toeing around it.

At this point, it's pretty obvious that CMC is more of a receiver than he is a runner and that CAP should be taking most of Stew's snaps. Stew was a very good RB for us when healthy for a long time, but the guy is clearly shot.

Are you factoring last night into this? Barry Sanders would have been ineffective last night.

I'm factoring everything into this going back to last year. CAP had a virtual identical YPC average to Stew last year. A 5th round pick who we oftentimes don't even deem worthy of a jersey. Stew just isn't a plus runner anymore and even compared to last year he looks noticeably less explosive this year. Even when a hole is there he just can't make it there in time anymore.
