Eagles Media Film Room - Why Carolina's Offense Presents A Huge Challenge

Got to admit. The Philadelphia Eagles are set with how they do media. Very informative articles discussing film, analysis, and stuff I love.

Really good breakdown of the Carolina Panthers. Everyone take a read.

Here's a segment on Cam. This article goes over way more than this, including jet sweeps, power option, CMC effect, etc.

The Freak Show

Cam Newton is one of the freakiest athletes in professional sports. With his combination of size and athleticism to go along with rare arm talent, he’s a challenge for any defense in any week of preparation because he’s capable of making throws like this at any moment.

On the next throw, from the third quarter, Newton drops an absolute dime on a vertical route downfield for a 31-yard touchdown to wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. This throw was defended by cornerback Darius Slay, but no one would have been able to make a play on this ball because of how perfectly it was thrown on a line to the back corner of the end zone.

Newton has trust in his towering targets on the outside, and those two receivers, along with tight end Ed Dickson, will be a challenge for the Eagles' secondary. Newton's ability to make any throw down the field is stressful for a defense, and Carolina can attack vertically at any point in the game. The Panthers’ receivers aren’t as explosive as what the Eagles saw a week ago against Arizona, but size is a factor down the field. The Eagles will have to match Carolina’s physicality in the passing game.

Now let’s focus on the run game. What happens in the backfield is really what makes this offense go and Newton is a huge part of it.

Carolina offensive coordinator Mike Shula is one of the best in the league at making a defense believe it sees a play coming, only to hit it with something completely different. With several personnel packages and a slew of potential ballcarriers at the running back, wide receiver, and quarterback positions, Shula utilizes the element of misdirection and disguise to constantly keep defenders guessing. Here’s an example.

Keep in mind that all of these videos are going to have a handful of plays in each. This was by design to show exactly how well the Panthers try to disguise their intentions to keep defenders at every level of the field on their toes.

On the first play, the Panthers line up with Newton under center, running back Jonathan Stewart in the backfield behind him, and rookie Christian McCaffrey offset almost as a fullback. This is a Counter run play, and it’s pretty basic as far as two-back runs go. All of Carolina’s run game isn’t bells and whistles because they will come right at you with the inside run game as well, using Stewart as their primary ballcarrier.

On the second play, Newton lines up under center again. This time there are two backs in the backfield, with Dickson as the lead fullback and Stewart in the I-formation. This is another Counter run from the Panthers ... until it’s not. Newton instead keeps the ball, sprinting on the Naked run to his right to nearly pick up a first down on second-and-short. Newton has scored long touchdowns throughout his career on plays just like this, and his ability to use his legs is a huge part of the Carolina offense.

On the third and final play, Carolina shows that same Naked run look from Newton, except Dickson leaks out on a pass route off the play-action. Detroit converges to try to stop the (second) run play, and Dickson gets behind the defense for a 57-yard reception and a near touchdown.

Not sure I get what the guy is talking about regarding Cams arm talent on the 2nd throw he highlights. The 1st one absolutely is a rare throw but the 2nd is a relatively simple 40 deep ball that basically every NFL QB can throw.

The sequence with the same backfield action with 3 different end results shows a good job by Shula to use early games to set things up for later.

Wat.

Are you seeing the same play I'm seeing? VERY few QBs make that throw in that kind of coverage in that perfect spot. Most of the time, it's either over the receiver, OOB, or picked off. Cam threw a beauty very few QBs can replicate.

yeah, I think that pass was the best he has thrown all year

Any QB could physically make that throw.

That was a dime 40 yards down field and high enough, on time, and in a place his WR could get both of his feet inbounds. It required touch, power and accuracy. I'm not saying it's the most amazing throw Cam has made, but it certainly isn't one "any QB could physically make."

It was a an absolutely fantastic throw. However I agree that it wasn't best example of superior arm talent. It was a great example of a perfectly placed ball with the right touch.

I said any QB could physically make it as in any QB can throw 40 yards down field with perfect protection like that.

This is what I was saying. It’s a fantastic throw and a really tough throw to make, but pretty much all NFL QBs have the physical ability to make that throw. Very few NFL QBs can throw the deep out from the opposite hash on a frozen rope with a defender in their grill.

The out shows his incredible arm talent. The TD pass is just a great throw.

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
