Rivera on blowing leads

“Probably the biggest thing was guys trying to do more than they needed to,” Rivera said. “We tried a little too much to keep it in front of us instead of being aggressive like we had been for three quarters.

“I thought we were just trying to keep it in front of us at that point, and it cost us.”

Is he serious?  You're the head coach.  I doubt the players would decide to play soft if someone isn't instructing them to.   Be accountable Ron!

He said "we" several times and said "guys".  He did not say the "players."  I am pretty sure he meant the coaching staff.

at least he realizes it's an issue

Sad thing is its been the big issue with him since back when he was on the brink of being fired and Jerry stood in the endzone before a game to watch him and let him know.how hot his seat was.

Even in our best season in 2015 we blew leads.

31 point lead to seattle

30+ to the giants

20+ in the 4th to indy having to pull the win off in OT

20+ to Greenbay for TD to pick the ball off down at about the 5 to escape.

Its just typical for a Rivera team

I’d say it’s also the offensive philosophy at the end of the 3rd and entire 4th quarter that aids in the opponents coming back. Shula/Ron loves to go run heavy when we have any kind of a lead, even when the opponent knows what the panthers are trying to do. Doesn’t matter about execution if the opponent knows what you’re going to do. More 3 and outs = our defense goes out there again with minimal rest.

@KB_fan

any chance you'd be interested in seeing how RR blown leads stack up against the league average for blown leads?

From whose perspective...certainly not his which is problematic because that's where the issue lies IMO.  If he continually thinks it's the secondary "missing opportunities" by "by trying to keep things in front of them" then correction will never happen.

It baffles me that this is RR's mentality even after all these years.  He came from and played with arguably the most aggressive defensive unit in the history of the National Football League.

After the choke job to Buffalo in 2013, where Buffalo drove 80 yards in 1:30.

Rivera had the worst record in the league (in his first 2+ years) when leading the 4th quarter and 2nd half.

Next game everyone assumed he was going to get canned. Richardson stood on the field and watched Ron pregame.  Panthers went onto drub the giants then had a heckuva rest of the season
