That was my initial thought also.  We seem to be predictable based on down and distance but I decided to see if I could find any stats to go along with this.

I found this and if I'm looking at it correcty there might be more to it then just what down it is:

https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/rushing-first-down-pct

Needles to say we are one of the league leaders in rushing on first down but the difference between us and other teams isn't as great as I thought it would be.

For example: we are third at 36%.  KC is 13th at 29%.  So we run 36 out of 100 times and they run 29 out of 100?  Doesn't seem like a big enough difference to totally explain the lack of production.

Maybe its a combination of down and distance along with formation and/or personnel groupings.

That stat isn't the percentage of times you rush the ball on 1st down, its the percentage of 1st downs you earn by rushing the ball.

So we get 36% of our 1st downs by rushing the ball, which means we get 64% by passing the ball.  Which makes sense because Shula is constantly putting us behind the sticks by rushing on 1st and 2nd down and then calling the "Save me Cam!" pass on 3rd, which Cam does a good job of completing.

That third and nine right before the two minute warning was definitely a "save me cam" pass

Like stbugs and I have pointed out over the last couple of days, running the ball doesn't run clock at the end of games... 1st downs do.

A concept utterly foreign to Ron Rivera and Mike Shula.

(P.S. Now there are *absolutely* certain situations where its appropriate to just go straight run.  But 20 minutes to go and all you want to do is run on 1st and 2nd downs?  Well, you and me and everybody on the opposing team knows the "Save me Cam!" pass is coming up on 3rd, don't we.  Gosh, I really wonder how Cam has always suffered from low completion %'s in his career?  Its an absolute puzzler.)

On the flip side. Incomplete passes stop the clock completely. Everyone, or so I thought, knows that when you pass, 3 things can happen, and 2 of them are bad.

Late in the Lions game  We threw the ball on Offense, and on Defense, we still blitzed. But that probably does not fit your narrative. So as usual, you will dismiss them. Yeah, you are that predictable.

You know, RR has a winning record. And yet, that is not good enough for some of you. Everything, and everyone, must be perfect. Unrealistic, but that is how you portray it.
