Why would anyone be upset about this signing unless we gave him a ridiculous contract? We were one tweeked knee away from putting Shaq at safety on Sunday.

You had to say "ridiculous contract" on a board full of people concerned about Marty Hurney as a GM, didn't you?

Not the greatest of times to have secondary changes with 2 gunslingers coming up. I'm glad Hurney was proactive. If we can win 1 of these next 2 games we'll be in great shape. We've got 2 extended rest periods over the next 8 weeks which should help us get healthy at the right time.

I'm not entirely sure what happened to him. He was never the fastest guy, but injuries seemed to make him lose a step. In run support he'd take terrible angles and get ran by. Didn't have the range to play single high safety and make plays on the deep ball.

Byrd didn't play poorly because he was on a bad defense. His poor play was a reason for the bad defense.

I like the signing. However, you have to wonder why he was unemployed 5 weeks into the season...

That's my thing.

I'm not bothered so much by the Saints letting him go. What I find more worrisome is that no one else picked him up. Honestly not sure if anyone even worked him out.

If he's still good but overlooked, great.

If he turns out to be a "hey, I've heard of this guy's signing, meh.

with the free agency pool of safeties being bad.  I think Byrd was the right signing.  Familiar with the division foes, decent in run support, coverage is a bit suspect.  did have 56 solo and 26 assist tackles last year 3 PBUs and 2 INT.

I can't find where he was rated as far as a grade on PFF or any outlet.  But i think this will be a decent signing if we didn't overpay.

This past year, Byrd finished with 82 combined tackles and two interceptions, and Pro Football Focus graded him in a tie with Tre Boston and George Iloka as the 46th-best safety (78.1) in the NFL.

Coleman finished 2016 with a respectable grade of 79.2, ranking 41st out of 90. This was down from his previous season (where he played primarily free safety) grade of 81.6, ranking 17th out of 87.
