It's refreshing to read something that comes from actual knowledge of the game. So we have made changes to the offense and it's not the same old same old. Hasn't worked but it's not the same as I keep hearing.

I really enjoy Schwartz's perspective and listening to him break things down on the radio. When you listen to former/current players like Schwartz/ Damione Lewis, etc. and people who break down film well (like Greg Cosell), the narrative is usually the exact opposite from what you read around here i.e. "Same old predictable Shula". No one is arguing it's not working at the moment but the reasons are not what is drilled into people's heads over and over again on the Huddle.

For years I've wanted to see stuff like this from a former player. I suppose many just don't find it worth their time.

There are a few that have been doing it but mostly just in discussion as guest hosts on local sports radio which many people write off around here for some reason. Seems like some of the guys are starting to fill the void by doing it in blogs and social media recently also. Igo and Roaring Riot seem to be doing it more as well.  It's really good insight for those that want to take the time to listen / read with an open mind.

Great article which goes much deeper than the mindless "fire Shula" stuff that is on 99% of threads here.  Its hard for people to accept that cams greatness is a function of his threat to run the ball.  If you take that away he is very marginal at best in this new offense with no designed runs.

I don't understand why the press coverage does not ask these questions

i feel like Shula and company do the same things over and over again and are surprised when nothing changes

to be honest I heard another former player on Sirus basically say let  Newton be Newton and if he is done with football in two years so be it at least he would be playing to his strengths Amd maybe he would look a little less miserable

I fell like they need to draft a backup in the 2nd Rd and get that person ready and no, hurney, I don't think the two young qbs are much more than camp fodder

Main disagreement  I have with Schwartz is the Oline isn't solid- with R. Kalil missing time and M. Kalil missing blocks, there's no way to judge  the offense right now.

Those players have backups and the NFL is next man up

put Taylor in for Kalil if need be and given Ryan's injuries the past two or three years, he is most likely finished, sad to say and should be helping his replacement

it is up to Matkasko and the offensive coaches to get those players ready and if they can't do it find someone who can

This offensive line is not playing angry. Put a fb in the backfield and get physical

those are my observations from watching them at the stadium both on the field and the bench Big contracts and glad to be there.   No urgency

They sit on the bench with zero enthusiasm.

Somebody needs to lead   If it isn't Cam, then Rivera needs to

I don’t get why the offense being installed etc is a excuse.

Cam was a rookie during the lock out year. Very little time to install the offense with a brand new QB and OC (one who is known as a mad scientist in Chud) and Cam came out and broke the rookie record (at the time) for most passing yards in a game by a rookie QB (previously Payton Manning).

You can give me any excuse you want, but shula is 100% the problem, and has been the problem the past 3 years. Until he is gone, Cam will waste, the talent and window we have no will be gone.

The problem with letting Cam be Cam and getting back to having him run the ball is that he is still not 100%.  I absolutely agree that having him as a running threat is the best way to maximize the offense with him as QB, but his surgically repaired shoulder needs to get stronger before we throw him back into the pit.  I don't think the plan was ever to totally get away from him running, just to open up other aspects of the offense while trying to protect him from taking so many hits.  But until he his healthy enough to take the pounding, it's probably the smart play to not expose him until he's ready.
