Cam Newton's rushing yards per attempt has declined for 5 comsecutive years. Trend?

At first blush, sure it looks like a significant downturn. However, in order to draw a valid conclusion, more than a few questions need to be answered, and some probably can't be without a ton of research, if then. First, is YPA a reliable and valid indicator of what you want to measure? From what little knowledge I have, all attempts aren't equal. For example, a goal line rush is inherently different from most others because it's capped. The list goes on. A designed run is different from a scramble. If he intended to pass, but then took a few steps and was sacked, does it count? Once you answer these, and other, threshold questions, and control all identified contributing variables as much as possible, then you must choose the correct type of statistical analysis.

Disregarding all of the above, and operating on the assumption that they are basically a "wash," then yeah, it looks like a trend, and no, it's not headed in the right direction. Might be interesting to see his passing stats too, especially so far this year post surgery v. last year and maybe '15 as well. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find those (distance related) down too. I bet BB knows the answer already, and plays that integrate the results are being drawn up right now. You guys who really know football on the D side of the ball, what's he doing? Maybe shifts of the secondary closer in? I dunno, but some solid discussion on how you would attack a QB with a lame shoulder and ankle to boot, with a porous OL, 88 out, KB not 100%, etc., could be a good read. Even better, how can Shula counter?
