Mike Shula's Words About "Encouragement From Film" In Context.

Yeah, I listened to the full Shula presser (so appreciate Roaring Riot Report posting that and the Wilks audio too... I think both are taken down now, they're generally only up for 24 hours), and I understood the context of his remarks, but I still was bothered by it.

1) If THAT was Cam looking "sound on his fundamentals," we're in BIG TROUBLE.  Lots of misreads, it seemed.... 3 INTs.  No thanks.

2) At least 3 or 4 times in the full Shula presser, he commented something like "you're not going to believe this" and "it may seem like I'm making excuses, but...."

It just wasn't believable.  Shula is a glass half-full kind of guy.  He was unable to stand up there and point a finger at what's wrong, take responsibility and commit to fixing it as best he can given the limitations of our personnel and injuries.  He's looking at things through rose colored glasses.

I was pretty bothered by it.

Basically as so many have said over and over, Shula is quite good on his scripted drives at the beginning of the game.  And regarding those drives, there were some nice things to look at, 1st drive especially, in terms of how we moved the ball.

But 7 or 8 of the remaining drives were pretty awful...  Shula has shown he doesn't know how to adjust.

So Shula may be optimistic about how his 1 or 2 scripted drives looked.  Some things worked.  But the rest of the game???  I'm not sure he watched it all!

Yeah, in addition to poor execution we were totally out-coached (again).

Unleash  the  2 TE/RB set which puts our best players on the field.

Lmao you must dream about chuds ballsack sanjay. That formation(top) is known as a wing T, which is most commonly used in youth football. Very effective uses alot of misdirection and is great for youth leagues because its simplicity and lack of a qb that can throw sideline to sideline. Why you think a two TE SET with ed dickson and chris manhertz will solve our problems is beyond me? You must of played TE in your backyard football days.  And besides, we use a heavy set but defenses in the NFL are far to smart and athletic for this formation to be useful in any other situations other than short yardage downs. We just need Cam to get his poo together thats all.

Cam can audible out of plays or use  motions to recognize the coverage defense is in. He needs to improve his pre-snap game first if this offense is going to truly evolve.

One example is the 3rd down screen to Samuel, he should have motioned CMC out to right and see what kind of defense Saints where playing , now he has 2 options to go and MLB would have to hesitate were the ball is going. The blitz was coming from right so if he detects that CMC would have been wide open for a big gain.

Sure motion can make a Defense show their hand. If someone follows the motion, you pretty much know it's man to man. Sometimes you like what you see, and just go with what you have planned. At the start of that play, there were only 3 guys in the area Defensively. Cam had to like his chances with that, so there is no reason to use motion.

The problem was how the ain'ts played it. And the one CB who made Sheppard miss. IMO, pre snap, that play looked good. Post snap, the ain'ts played it very well. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Good time Charlies' got he blues.

Yea but he gets free  6 wins for being in a shitty divison, oh yeah and gets to pick his own players that fits his scheme.

Great thing we drafted Butler instead of Hunter Henry or OT instead of busted DE & WR.

Gotta love how people undermine the fug out of Belichick. Just accept the facts,  he's the best coach we've ever seen in football.

I believe the comment about Cams fundamentals in the pocket refers to him stepping up to throw. Rivera made some comments about Cams lack of practice and it's affect on the blocking scheme. Cam tends to set up deeper than most Qbs requiring an adjustment to the linemens set up. He stepped up better this week.

I really think most of our passing game problems stem from lack of reps for Cam with the new guys combined with KB and Olsen being out. Timing sucks.

That's a pretty bold statement there Cotton. Care to add some context? Or would you prefer to let the statement stand on it's own?

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
