Breaking Based

Recommended Posts

New pet project I am working on. Have gotten a ton of questions on getting on a  plant based diet, why I started, how to get started, etc.

So, I am putting together a new blog to explain all that. It is called Breaking Based.

Breaking Based - Plant based diet

click the logo to check it out if you wish. Just going to keep it updated with advice, answer questions, new recipes, etc. Don't really expect it to go anywhere, more of a labor of love and try to help anyone out who finds themselves in the same position I was.

I’ve been on a plant-based diet for almost a month now, and it’s simply great. Many thanks to you, Jeremy. Your posts, combined with a couple of documentaries (What The Health and Food, Inc. on Netflix), got me to make the change. I also recently read a book entitled “How Not to Die” that goes into tremendous detail about the benefits of a plant-based diet.

I’m only a month shy of 30, but I have a history of heart disease/heart attacks/cancer/diabetes on both sides of my family. After a family member died recently of a heart attack at age 67, I decided it was time to make a change and take control. After only two weeks of changing my eating habits, my blood pressure (usually elevated) was at the perfect level, and I feel so much better. Low carb diets would help me lose weight quickly, but they always made me feel sluggish, and I never quite felt right about eating eggs and sausage every morning. I’m still losing weight, but it feels more “natural,” I suppose. And for me it’s been much easier to give up animal products than it was to follow a strict low-carb diet.

If you’re on the fence, watch the documentaries I mentioned above. It took me a while to finally dive in, but I’m glad I did and there’s no going back. You may surprise yourself at how easily you can make the transition. You also don’t have to quit all animal products at once. I love milk, and I made the switch to almond milk a few months ago. I don’t crave the cow version at all anymore.

Looking forward to checking out the blog, Jeremy.

Checked out your story (interesting), you mentioned you had kids. I was wondering did you convert them to an all plant based diet as well or do they still eat regular kid food, meat etc?

I cook professionally healthy meals for families and it always puzzles me that the parents eat clean but never really passed those ideas down to the kids, sautéed kale & spinach egg whites for mom & dad but I’m still cranking out pancakes for the kids.

So if you were able to have that epiphany about diet then be able to convert your kids as well I think that would make a great section on your blog.

Educating kids about eating good clean unprocessed food is one of the most important things we can do IMO.

This is a tough issue that I wrestle with daily. It's a difficult battle, it's mostly a battle against social norms. What kind of mom deprives their kid of a hot dog?! "What! you wont let your child have ice cream?come on mom, he's only a kid, look he has no meat on his bones"

The pressure comes from many places. Neighbors, grandparents, schools,  other kids and of course your own child.

You try to limit the sugar intake but then the neighbor gives your kid an ice cream sandwich when he's playing at their house, he goes to grandma and she makes him a hot dog and sends him home with a bag of cookies, and of course you send your kid a mostly healthy lunch to school and he's surrounded by other kids eating honey buns, fruit by the foot and chips so of course he's going to come home and lobby for such treats.

I teach him what healthy eating truly is and I make him eat vegetables and fruit quite a bit, I try to encourage him to make good choices as he gets older when it comes to food and moms not there to make him order a vegetable over the fries. Right now i think that's the best I can do.

I think our society is obsessed with our children eating like poo. It's a right of passage.

Right On!  I'm in the same boat with my kids. Even trying to develop a healthy eating palette since they were born it’s difficult to maintain with all the outside noise.

I come across so many families and clients that just don’t care, it’s like you were saying rite of passage I get that “C’mon you’re only a kid once”  I don’t say anything for fear of being “That Guy” or outright fired if it’s somebody I’m cooking for.

Probably one of the proudest moments as a father as when their grandmother came over and wanted to take them to McDonalds my oldest (6yr) said No grandma that’s junk.

Right On! For being aware and educating them, more people need to have that sentiment.

Breaks my heart to see a seriously overweight child double fisting 2 fried churros while they walk from the car to the store

I've been waking up early and making shakes for the family since last Thursday and they've been a hit.

Hubby and I share this one:

2 cups of spinach or kale (spinach taste better)

2 cups of coconut water

1 cup of mixed frozen mixed fruits such as peaches, mangos, pineapples and strawberries

1 banana or 1 peel apple

This shake is really filling. Definitely keeps me full until noon.

The Kiddo gets:

2 cups of coconut water

1 cup of frozen mixed fruits such as peaches, mango, pineapples and strawberries

1 banana

I pour it in a Pokemon glass with a colorful bendy straw and he loves it and ask me to make sure I make him one the next morning.

Gonna give that first one a try. Sounds good.

Smoothies are great! You can experiment and add whatever you like.  I’ll make this one for lunch a few times a week to keep me full, the avocado helps with that + the benefits of the healthy fats.

2-3 Kale Leaves / Spinach would work

½ Avocado

½ Pear

1-2 slice pineapple

2 strawberries

4-5 slices cucumber

Squeeze of lime

Ice / water

Got another recipe recommendation here. I made this pumpkin black bean soup yesterday, and it was an absolutely delicious fall-time meal. I will be happily eating on the leftovers for a few days. I would also recommend subscribing to this channel.

Never been a big smoothie guy but I've been making these and enjoy them so thank you.

Once you get over the initial jolt of drinking something that tastes like liquid spinach at first sip, it has a nice flavor.

    • Yeah that with the Taylor Moton clip from yesterday...These guys have felt completely hamstrung the last two weeks
    • Our receivers were right there on the field, they also watched Bryce on film, and it sounds like they're looking forward to Dalton. Xavier Legette on Andy Dalton: "He got a fine understanding of things. I like the way he throws the ball and how to position it, so I feel like we going be good... On the go balls, he knows the right timing and the right among of air... The deep ball that's something I feel I'm good at, and that's something I been working on at practice [with Andy]... I ain't talked to him [Bryce] about it [the benching] yet, but we just got to continue to play. Next man up, and it's Andy."   Diontae Johnson on Andy Dalton: "A vet who's been back there for a while and knows the game, so once you have a guy like that back there, it allows you to be yourself more... He takes a lot off our plate just by having that experience knowing what to do, getting us the right calls, knowing when the pressure is coming..."
