also pretty myopic to say a roster move in a league where all 53 spots are treasured, particularly at the 90-> cutdown, is irrelevant

When 8 sports are inactive and it didn't cost the Panthers any of their players then yes it's irrelevant.

Regardless of what we would have used the space for, this whole idea of holding a second kicker for a trade as some kind of savvy move just shows the current leadership of this franchise is playing checkers.

We're wasting time and energy on low value items, we're ignoring big issues and not even taking the easy steps to solve our actual problems.

This team's leadership is blind to what does and does not matter in the NFL and this kicker ordeal is just a clear example of it.

The move they tried to make with the kicker has nothing to do with "ignoring big issues". LOL. That's like saying Cam is playing poorly because he's worried about his clothes. It was only a "kicker ordeal" because our fans are ridiculous and made it way more than it really was.

But brings up another item.

Why was Ryan Kalil still active in game one when it was known that he was hurt?

Major issue in the end? No, because we won, but still a dumb move.

Possibly a major issue in the end (long-term) that we just don't know about (yet)...simply because he hasn't been active since.

He was active so he could travel on the teams dime to see his family.  JR gonna take care of his faves man.

It's not even so much that issue itself to me as it is yet another indication that the men leading our team just have a tendency toward bad decisions.

The kicker we kept had a sizable impact on the morale and failure of this team last year. We drafted a kicker for the first time ever with the probably intention of replacing Gano.

the drafted kicker out plays gano in the pre-season.

the staff and GM wasted time and resources being unsure of whether to cut the failure of a kicker we have. They clearly discussed this down to the wire because we kept both guys on the roster -- unheard of. We then spent more time attempting to create a trade for one of them. This is time that could have been spent evaluating and discussing other areas of need for the team. Instead we got cute with trying to get a late round pick for nothing.

we also used this as an opportunity to show a lack of decisive leadership, and ultimately reiterated to the team that not much has changed in regard to winning and we're willing to strap ourselves to failures because maybe they're a nice guy and a veteran. Then, we don't even use Gano on a make-able field goal because we're scared that he would miss. That's the implication of not wanting to "give the saints momentum."

We don't even have faith in the decision that we ultimately made. That shows how bad this leadership is currently.

This is completely false. Yay he was 2-2 in the preseason games - he was trash most of camp. The competition wasn't even a competition until Gano missed against the Steelers. I'm not saying your concerns about not using Gano aren't valid, but the popular Huddle narrative of Butker being better isn't even close to true. There was a reason why he cleared waivers.

People made this about losing Armah, but when that didn't happen, I guess it's now about Hurney. Who gives a fug?

Even if it was a gamble, it was basically low risk. What could we have possibly lost, a seventh round pick? It's not even in the same league of Dave Gettleman's gamble with Cam's blind side all these years.

If you only send the guy out there twice, is it really a competition or are you just setting up to justify a decision you've already made?

Gano was a known commodity. If they really wanted a proper tryout, why not just send Butker out for every attempt?

If this were the only example, maybe it'd be no big deal.

When you're talking about the same guys who among other things chose Mike Shula over Hue Jackson, it becomes one of many.

It hasn't been all bad. I admit that it's getting to a point where new people and fresh ideas may be what the doctor must  order, but it hasn't been all bad.
