I think part of it is that we don't surprise anyone. It's not hard for a D to completely sell out and stop a run. You'd think we'd fake it and run Cam the other way with a TE going out with him. Our problem is when we run a fake/QB run there's no play action and there's no safety valve so Tye D can just go after Cam.

I don't recall the last time I've seen us do a play action fake, you know like the ones you see every week where the blocking TE gets lost and the QB hits them for a wide open TD. I don't recall having seen us do that even though I can remember many goal line failures. I think that's where Shula fails the most, at the goal line because he no longer has room for his damn deep drops and long passes.

We used to do the PA right and Olsen would block for a split second, then cross to the left side of the field and be wide open. I think it was early 2015 last time that was used. Still, we have guys that should be able to run the ball right up the gut, or let Stew jump over the pile. Instead we tried to run a stretch play and penetration got us for a 3 yard loss and was over after that last game.

To early in the season to worry about red zone numbers anyway.  The majority of the numbers are from one  game (Buf).  Gano kicked two field goals from inside the 20 against SF and one of them was at the SF 18 with 5 seconds left on the clock.  I wouldn't even count that one, which would make Us 1 for 2 from the red zone against SF.  If the Buffalo style performance continues, it will be problematic.  But for now, its just a single game.

I guess it can't get much worse but damn we've been awful in the red zone or right outside. As posted above, the playcalling was trash. Even the one great move by CMC before the errant throw is covered if not for the LBer being completely fooled.

We should get better because we can't get worse, but I don't take it as optimistic. I just take it as another bit of proof that Offensive coaching (not sure how much say Ron has) is atrocious and like the SB, it will cost us. It almost cost us a win last week.

I do not see this as a negative at all!

Couldn't disagree more.  When we play a team with a real offense and NEED to convert in the red zone, this is going to come back to bite us.

The Defense is playing lights out, but against two weak offenses.  Even if they continue to play this well eventually there is a breakdown that will put us behind.  Remember how well we did last year when we start slow?  Let the Falcons and Julio but 21 points on us and we're in a world of hurt.

Offense needs a lot of work.  We have the tools, but we have a long way to go.  Losing Greg is huge.
