I have the utmost respect for our teachers. One of the hardest, least paid, most thankless jobs that undoubtedly is essential to the survival and growth of this country. 

I wouldn't be where I am today without fantastic teachers. Tell your wife thank you from all the little shits that don't appreciate her now but will one day.

Good luck to your wife and I hope she wins! I can certainly relate to knowing someone that helps kids on a regular basis. My mother is a high school Biology teacher and she was won teacher of the year for her county twice. I have even helped her grade some assignments when she is busy with other tasks.

My wife teaches kindergarten and before that taught first grade. I would help her grade things if everything got a little too overwhelming.

I don't know if it's happened to you, but it's demoralizing grading the papers of 6 year olds with better handwriting than yourself...
