Well it appears it was the right move.  We won, no?

That is the funny part. If we had given up a TD I could understand the questioning but we won. So of course it was the right decision. Ron told folks when and why he goes for it and other times why he doesn't. If he trusts the offense and likes our chances based on the flow of the game. If we are struggling and not playing well he doesn't take chances. It is that simple.

W

2-0

Did the Panthers put on a clinic? Maybe an abortion clinic, but they won. So who cares if we didn't blow the opposing team out?

look at the positives- that maniac clapping mcDerpmount lost. Our defense dominated his powerful running team. Our defense looks better without him. His team lost a game against Gano.

The way THAT game was going, kicking the FG was the right call. Every point was vital. If our offense had shown more throughout the game, I would have said go for it. But anyway, if hindsight is 20/20, kicking it was the right call. We won!

This is the point. You can't just look at a stat and make a decision without context.  Coaching decisions have to take into account how the game is going and what is working or isn't working. In one game you might go for it and another like Sunday not go for it. Football is about matchups which change from game to game. Decision making has to as well. In this situation it made sense to take the 3. This week against the Saints perhaps we go for it if their offense is working. Again just like one size fits all doesn't work all the time, one strategy for all 4th and goals doesn't work either.

We certainly seem to have one strategy though. JK It's funny because different posters want different things when faced w 1st and goal on the1. I've read throw it 3 times to your tall red zone receivers, run it 3 times w Jstew, and QB sneak it 3 times w Cam. No matter what we did, it would be criticized by someone. As for the 4th down call in this game, you guys are right that situation dictates and faith in success up until that point. Taking the 3 was the right call, in this case. Maybe not next time. But OP brings up a valid point.

We spent high draft picks getting more offensive weapons. We have the best short yardage QB in the game. And we have to rely on our defense to save the game because our "evolved" offense can't put points on the board. My opinion is that you play to win. Drive the dagger in and twist. Even if you make the field goal, a TD and you lose. Ron is notorious for not stepping on the throats of his opponents. Put the damn game away. I would rather him have to sit up on stage after a game and say we were trying to put the game away and lost rather than we kicked a field goal and played it safe. This team needs that killer instinct and Ron doesn't seem to have it.
