Shutting down the new Panthers "evolved" offense in two easy steps!

I've not been a Shula fan for a long time (if ever).  He is forever looking like the guy trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.  However, this offensive output is pretty clearly at the feet of a few players in my mind.  If the players are open, then it's the QBs job to get it in their hands.  If a defensive plan has to revolve around stopping two star players, then the opposing defenses should have more than they can handle.

CMC has created a lot of opportunity for other players on the field by forcing the coverage.  Cam did not make them pay the way other QBs would.  I think Cam will get better as the season goes on (he'd better, because the defense cannot continue this ridiculous pace for the entire season).  If Cam wants to be considered an elite QB, then his standards are Rogers, Ryan (as much as it kills me to say it), Brees (even moreso), and Brady.  At best, he is running a 2nd-tier effort this season.

Lol you act like the opposing defense has the personnel to send extra blitzers, devote extra attention to McCaffrey, and STILL cover the rest of our receiving options. Bottom line, if #1 and #2 happen....then there will be open receivers and plays to be made and that's what we have to take advantage of via execution.

I'm tired of this being either all on Shula or all on Cam. The truth is somewhere in between. Our offense can't get clicking because either the playcalling is poor and adjustments aren't made, or the execution is poor and throws/blocking assignments are missed.

The first down play calls are predictable

the second down play calls are  an abomination

now comes 3rd down which is is a toxic mixture of down 1 and down 2 ....add to down 3.  the offense still can't handle the blitz and Newton is a shell of himself and now has tremendous pressure to execute with a bad play call and a leaky line, and the end to the story is not hard to write.

When a pro team has first and 1 on the one yard line and trots out the garbage the Panthers did  in the red zone, it is pathetic.

Newton is not blameless in this.

He is a shell of what he was in 2015 and we may never see that guy again

I don't care if the reason is off the field or on the field but this version of Newton is not a good one   He has to lead and if he can't at least pretend to be leading  Yes Kalil was out, yes Olsen broke his foot, every Sunday QBs deal with change, coaches too.

Confidence lost  is hard to regain. Newton used to play like he thought he was the greatest athlete on the field. After the Superbowl and that 2016 season, that Newton is well gone

a big shoutout to the Panthers organization for not fixing the tackle issues much earlier, hiring a decent o coordinator and a QB coach who might actually challenge Newton to grow.

A final kudos to mike Shula for taking his best player off the field for the wildcat. What in god's name did he see on film or anywhere else to even call that play, against one of the better defenses in the NFL?

When you absolutely dominate a team in the first half and only have 6 points to show for it, it starts at the top. Our defense abused them and repeatedly set us up with short fields and all we could manage were two field goals. I hope they figure it out because that won't fly in the next couple weeks... But thankfully the bills have a better defense than the saints and Pats

I wonder how much of a conversation we would be having if Cam made those two "lay up" passes and we added two TDs?

The thing is, Cam missed some passes.  He had some good throws too.  He's still getting into shape.  Or is that too much of an excuse?  No matter how you cut it, he needs to make those passes.  TDs put pressure on teams.  FGs give them hope.  See how McD acted when Cam missed CMC on what would have been a go ahead TD?

I am in the mind set that we have enough options on our offense that if you blitz, we should have a quick option.  If you cover, we can find the open guy.

Losing Olsen is going to suck, but this is a next man up league.  This means those throws are going to have to go to someone, could be KBs big chance to have a BIG time year.  He and Funchess did play really well this week.

Yeah, Cam actually played pretty darn well, but the one's he's missing are game changing plays if he hits them. We will get our asses kicked by the Buccs and Falcons if he misses those kinds of throws in those games.

I mostly agree with this quote.

Don't have a problem with the playcalling for the most part.   But execution in the red zone was bad.  The coaching staff gets some blame for poor execution.

2nd and 1 yesterday, mid-1st quarter.  In the NFL, 2nd and 1 is a *great* time for play action.  Play action would also be a great thing to use in this situation to get your QB an (hopefully) easy throw and get him into a rhythm.

Shula?  HUR DUR JUST NEEDZ 1 YARDZ SO LETZ JEST RUN IT AND GIT THAT FRIST DOWN HUR DUR!

Shula?  Stewart run for a loss of two yards.  3rd and 3.

Shula?  CMC run for no gain.

Punt.

1st and goal at the 1 yesterday, late 4th quarter.  Outside of Cam leaps and inside runs, we have never ever established that we can make that 1 or 2 yard power-run at the goal line with standard runs between the tackles to the RB.

Shula?  Stewart inside run for a loss of two yards.  2nd and goal from the 3.

Shula? Stewart off tackle for one yard.  3rd and goal from the 2.

Shula? SAVE ME CAM FOR GOD SAKE SAVE ME AGAIN PLEASE! Cam has an incredibly bad throw missing CMC for a TD.  Cam once again gets the finger pointed at him (and takes 100% ownership for it post-game) when, once again, his OC is a damn retard.

Sorry, the offensive line gave Cam at least 3 seconds on most of the sacks and pressures. You can't ask for more than that against the Bills.

When fricking Ed Dickson is open 40 yards down field, that is a hint that the play took waaaaaay too long to develop.

Einstein would have lots to say about this "execution" talk from Rivera every year.

Rivera basically sends an army private to storm Normandy alone with a pocket knife then whines he didn't take a single machine gun nest. fugin buffoon.

Guess I gotta spell out the point here since I'm on the Huddle but the above means to put your people in position to succeed. mkay
