Was it stupid to promote Matsko to "running game coordinator?"

I took the liberty of highlighting a segment of your post. I agree with you on the tackle situation. Cam was facing way too much pressure off of the edge.  Under another topic I suggested switching things up a bit. I'd consider moving Matt to RT (we're paying him too much to bench him) and try Moton out at LT and see how that works. I'd also try giving D.Williams some snaps at LG. We fancy ourselves a running team. If that's the case then we need some maulers up front.

This may leave A.Norwell as the odd man out, but we've already given Turner a big extension. We may not be able to pay him this offseason with all of the holes we have on the team.  We need a 2nd passing threat at TE, a SS, and potential replacement for C.Johnson at LDE. Starr needs to be retained at DT to keep up strong up front, and we'll need a center soon because Ryan isn't getting any younger. In today's NFL you just can't keep everyone if you pay them what they're worth.

I've got to disagree here in a situation that would leave Norwell the White Buffalo out of the equation. We don't mess with the guards on this team -- they are rock solid. Turner and Norwell both have long futures here with us (I think cap space for Norwell will be found after a couple of retirements at the end of this year.)

My personal opinion is that we have some conditioning issues for our tackles right now. It was hot and humid on that field and I think the big guys were wearing down fast. D-linemen were rotating in and out for the Bills, but our O-line was having to slug it out for those long times of possession. As the season wears, though, their conditioning will come up as the temperature comes down. It still might be a good idea to sub in Moton for a series or two during the game at alternating tackle positions. Give him some realtime experience and see if we can get a better look at his potential.

If you can make the cap numbers work, I would definitely keep Norwell. He a top tier guard in the league and I wouldn't blame him for wanting to be paid like one. We won't be able to keep him if he wants a contract similar to Trai's unless another part of the team suffers.

I think it's easier to replace Norwell at G than Starr at DT. I never appreciated what Starr brings to the team until the last couple of years. The defense wouldn't be the same if he left. In hindsight, I think the V.Butler pick was ill spent. I can't see him ever having the impact of Lotulelei or Kwann.

We have a 36yr old SS, a 30+ center who appears to breaking down, a past his prime Charles Johnson, no proven #2 WR ,no proven WR in the slot, or guy to man the slot, and no pass threat as TE behind Olsen. As great as Pep is he can't play forever. I don't think any of us are sold on Worley as our long term #2 CB. J. Stewart is a 10 year veteran which is ancient in RB years. We've got to find a replacement b/c CMAC can't shoulder that load by himself. We've got some tough decisions to make over the next couple of years.

Just out of curiosity, who do you expect to retire at year's end? And, how much money would that free up?

Just who retires is going to depend on how this season shakes out. If we don't even make the playoffs, I would expect for you to see Pep and Davis call it a career and JStew might just decide that 10 years with no concussions is a good run and a good time to move on and enjoy raising that new baby of his. I think you'll see Charles Johnson and Mike Adams head for the sunset as well. Should we win the Superb Owl, I'd expect to see the same guys walk away happy.

If we make the playoffs and have a deep run but fall just short, the list above will probably be much, much shorter.

Honestly Phil, I didn't even know this happened.

I can't imagine anyone being worse at game planning an offense than Shula.

I was pretty busy last year and didn't keep up with the team like I normally do and missed it as well. I didn't realize the change had been made until reviewing the list of coaches in yesterday's gameday booklet.

As other have noted, there's too many variables to deduce whether one positional head made a quantifiable difference in that unit, but you could also ask whether the team may have lost something in matsko's movement to a more architectural role if he was one of the league' best at heading up the development of individual linemen.

It's something that should be investigated.  We can't have Matt and Moton and Williams lose out on coaching because the guru is playing run game sims.
