Panthers Have No Interest in Shaun Smith

Ok, if you're going to say "Detroit didn't even want him, why would we", then were you saying the samething about Brayton(Raiders)? Lewis(Rams)? Diggs(Packers)? Vincent(Cardinals)? K.Moore(Lions)? Bridges(Cardinals)? Or any other player we signed from a bad team that's turned into a solid player for us? You can throw in Chris Harris too because at the time, the Bears safeties were pretty bad. I thought you would be one of the posters that should know just because a player is from a bad team doesn't mean he is a bad player.

Yup.

if we really wanted him we could probaly fit him under the cap but really why would we work that hard for him??

LOL Yeah, heaven forbid our FO actually take the time to restructure a contract or two. Geeez how much of a pain that would be. Better to just kick back, have a few drinks, go golfing. Eh, let's not worry about doing any of that "work" stuff. It's not like we're sitting at 0-3 with one of the worst run D's and DT situations in the league...

It might be more Richardson not wanting him due to character issues rather than Fox/Hurney. Who knows.

We have put up with Smith for a while now. We also let Meshawn come to Carolina. The fact is if Hurney and Fox wanted him they could have him.

If Shaun Smith were that great of player then he wouldn't be available to begin with. Just because a guy has talent doesn't mean he will fit in or be a help. If all we wanted was a talented guy who was suspect in other areas, we would have kept Kris Jenkins.

A guy with character issues, coming off a suspension for steroid use who would likely want more than we have in cap space and you guys can't figure why we wouldn't want any part of him??

He has had a total of 2 sacks in his career has failed to play a full season (all 16 games) since he came into the league and had one huge year in his career in 2007. Last year he had no sacks, 36 tackles (26 solo, 10 assists) and played 11 games. He is not that great.

You guys say Lewis is not starter material yet he had 43 tackles (33 solo, 10 assists) and 3.5 sacks and played 15 games in 2008. Yet you want to get Smith who is a well documented problem and has poorer numbers.

I don't get it at all.

Cmon now, Detroit didn't even want him. Why in the world would we want him?

You're like a beacon of hope shinning through a thick fog of stupidity. Keep up the good work. :hurray:

The one thing that makes me hesitate about signing him is that no other team has shown an interest either. We are not the only team with DT and run stopping problems, so if other teams are not giving him a look then it makes me question how serious his 'problems' were.

Can't remember who said it, but they commented that putting a player with a tendancy for trouble on a team who is losing bad and it's just asking for trouble. The players tend to get into trouble because of poor play of the team, or that they simply are a waste of life. Regardless it is a HUGE gamble to pin our DL on a problem guy.

A lot of people have pointed that we have 'problem' guys on our roster already. Smith n Pep seem to be the ones that pop up. Not sure why Pep is there. He obviously had his 'water pill' problems early in his career, but since then has bee as close to a model professional as you can get. Smith on the other hand has had some bad moments and it is hard to jutisfy keeping him over other players with problems. Whilst I do not think you can excuse what he did, you can't question his commitment and determination to put right and to win games.

It is always harder to bring someone in with problems than keep one of your own as you can see their true intentions and how sincere they are in improving. The fact is we have no idea on the character on Shaun Smith, but know Steve very well, so comparing the two is impossible.

Is he better than Hayden? I would imagine so but it's not a guarentee. No one knows if he has been keeping in shape whilst he has been out of work, nor do they know how he will perform in another team. One season wonders often only seem to fit one type of system as they finally 'click' in that system and then teams figure them out. What is certain though, is that Hayden will not become a cancer in the locker room as he genuinely is a model professional, Shaun Smith has the potential to and on a team where the players need to rally round each other, taking a risk on a potential cancer is a dangerous move.

Am I the only one who thinks there is nothing wrong with Steve Smith and that he has little to no character issues? He's made a few mistakes and he has an aggressive personality. I'm just lost when people start talking about serious character issues...

Uhh..cause Shaun took a water pill too? Not wanting Shaun because we think his character is an issue is hog wash to me. Steve beat 2 of his teammates and we still keep him. It's hard for any other player to top that. And them saying they don't want a player because of anything less than what Steve did makes us out to be bunch of hypocrites. Especially when we brought in Keyshawn. We have 2 guys that did wat he did, one of them doing it twice!

The theory of putting a player on a bad team might mean disaster is bologna. He played for the Browns! Then went to the Lions. How can he not like having the chance to START for us? He would be stupid to turn that down.

Shaun has done more than just take water pills. From recollection he also got in the dog house with his coaches in Detroit and also punched Brady Quinn whilst in Cleveland.

I do not deny that keeping Smith after he had two fights with teammates makes much sense consdering the reasoning for not picking Shaun up. The reasoning in my mind is that the Panthers know Steves personality, they know what kind of person he is and why these things happened. Shaun on the other hand the Panthers do not know. They do not know what motivated these incidents and they do not know why these things follow him around. It is fairly clear to me why one is tolerated and the other not.

Regarding the 'problem' players on bad teams is unfortunately significant. When you are losing consistently the team bond and determination to get each other through is what snaps teams out of the losing streaks. If someone comes in and upsets that balance it can cause numerous players to quit on the team. Of course the flip side is not bringing in quality will just as likely cause us to continue losing. ;)

Frankly you just need to look at it as an equation.

Is he THAT much better than what we have? Is that margain big enough to justify his potential problems?

I honestly can't see him making that big of a splash if we did sign him and the potential for things going wrong is increased by signing him. I do find it a touch odd as a couple have mentioned, that suddenly this guy is the flavor of the fan base. He really has not done much to justify this kind of devotion...

And like I said before the samethings he's done, Steve and Pep has done except Steve worse.

Smith is one of the top wideouts in the game. Peppers has potential to be the best defensive lineman in the game. Shaun Smith just plain sucks. He'd be lucky to make this team in training camp, even with all of its line issues.
