Panthers Have No Interest in Shaun Smith

Before blasting the team you all should take a class in cap management. Then look at our current cap situation and you would understand we can not afford him, he is not going to take vet min like the bowling ball just did. Guys there is a reason this team is filled with late round draft picks and street free agents.

But is he good enough to justify the baggage. I am hoping Burton can help as well. Just don't think Smith is a good option at this point.

As far as this baggage you speak of, what has he done that Steve Smith and Peppers hasn't? Steve's mishaps were worse than both of them combined.

He was only slated to make 1.1 million in Detroit this season. Now he's off a suspension and will only play max 12 games. Clearing the amount of cap space needed to bring him in wouldn't be the hardest thing in the world (assuming we don't have enough already). Panthers have stated they don't want him for character reasons, not because they can't afford him.

If Shaun Smith were that great of player then he wouldn't be available to begin with. Just because a guy has talent doesn't mean he will fit in or be a help. If all we wanted was a talented guy who was suspect in other areas, we would have kept Kris Jenkins.

A guy with character issues, coming off a suspension for steroid use who would likely want more than we have in cap space and you guys can't figure why we wouldn't want any part of him??

He has had a total of 2 sacks in his career has failed to play a full season (all 16 games) since he came into the league and had one huge year in his career in 2007. Last year he had no sacks, 36 tackles (26 solo, 10 assists) and played 11 games. He is not that great.

You guys say Lewis is not starter material yet he had 43 tackles (33 solo, 10 assists) and 3.5 sacks and played 15 games in 2008. Yet you want to get Smith who is a well documented problem and has poorer numbers.

I don't get it at all.

Cmon now, Detroit didn't even want him. Why in the world would we want him?

he's gonna make the Pro Bowl from his couch.

It's both. Don't want him and don't have the money after we signed Burton and Thomas. I don't believe the money for example we spent on Leonard went away when we put him on IR. We can't just keep adding players even due to injury issues without eventually running out.

What does this cryptic remark mean??

Ok, if you're going to say "Detroit didn't even want him, why would we", then were you saying the samething about Brayton(Raiders)? Lewis(Rams)? Diggs(Packers)? Vincent(Cardinals)? K.Moore(Lions)? Bridges(Cardinals)? Or any other player we signed from a bad team that's turned into a solid player for us? You can throw in Chris Harris too because at the time, the Bears safeties were pretty bad. I thought you would be one of the posters that should know just because a player is from a bad team doesn't mean he is a bad player.

We all know Detroit always makes the best personnel choices and is widely known as the gold standard for how to build an NFL franchise.

It isn't who they give up as much as who they think actually has talent and who they over pay for when they don't deliver.

You know that how panthers55? I haven't seen official cap numbers released for months and there are plenty of guys we can restructure if necessary, especially with next year most likely being uncapped.

At one point I believe we were down to around 2 million bucks. It could be a little more. Even at vet minimums we added Thomas, Burton and Leonard. Harris while cheap still adds to the total. That assumes we don't have more injuries and don't have to add more guys if someone like Thomas gets hurt as well. They haven't been releasing contracts but the veteran minimum for Thomas is $755,000. Burton and Leonard were both cheaper at $450,000. Rookies get $275,000. So the totals for these guys are about $1.9 million.

I gotta believe we are pretty close to tapped out and a guy like Smith doesn't justify another $750,000 minimum. You make a point that if we really wanted him we could probaly fit him under the cap but really why would we work that hard for him??

That's a good point, we have been pretty good at finding pearls in other folks trash bin. Still none of those guys have the baggage Smith does. The one guy among those who has had issues- Bridges- is gone because of them.

And like I said before the samethings he's done, Steve and Pep has done except Steve worse.
