Panthers Have No Interest in Shaun Smith

If Shaun Smith were that great of player then he wouldn't be available to begin with. Just because a guy has talent doesn't mean he will fit in or be a help. If all we wanted was a talented guy who was suspect in other areas, we would have kept Kris Jenkins.

A guy with character issues, coming off a suspension for steroid use who would likely want more than we have in cap space and you guys can't figure why we wouldn't want any part of him??

He has had a total of 2 sacks in his career has failed to play a full season (all 16 games) since he came into the league and had one huge year in his career in 2007. Last year he had no sacks, 36 tackles (26 solo, 10 assists) and played 11 games. He is not that great.

You guys say Lewis is not starter material yet he had 43 tackles (33 solo, 10 assists) and 3.5 sacks and played 15 games in 2008. Yet you want to get Smith who is a well documented problem and has poorer numbers.

I don't get it at all.

Cmon now, Detroit didn't even want him. Why in the world would we want him?

Thats like comparing the stats of Ted Washington vs John Randle. Lewis and Smith are totally different types of DT's

Lose at all costs.

We apparently have no interest in winning either.

Correct! The Panthers are under-achievers.

If it makes sense, don't do it - Hurney and Fox

And me too. I try to under-achieve every day! (See what I did? I didn't say "I under-achieve", I said "I try to", thus reinforcing that I'm under-achieving.)

I would agree Ted Washington and John Randle have nothing in common. One weighed almost 100 pounds more than the other and one was a sack specialist with 137 while the other averaged 10-15 tackles and 2 sacks a year. Plus they played in different type systems.

As for Lewis and Smith they do play in different systems which would be a legitimate argument but they are within 24 lbs in weight and both are used more as run specialists now that Lewis is starting.

If you would prefer then compare Smith to Kemo. Kemo had 36 tackles with 31 solo and 5 assists in 2008. He had no sacks the same as Smith but played in more games. Anyone think before the New York game that Kemo was that great or worth the money we were paying him? If Kemo had the issues that Smith does, would we be running out to sign him. The fact is that Smith is not that good nor is that great in run defense. At this point I would take a chance on a cheap retread like Hollis Thomas over a well documented problem like Smith who would want more money than we have. Neither are game changers but at least Hollis is a team player who is already fitting in well according to Beason.

Yeah I know Thomas has health issues but so does Smith.
