Why Carolina will have the #1 defense in 2017

#1 defense needs better depth on the line and better package players for nickel and dime. You got Seymour from the Bills. Good inside man coverage guy. The pieces are there for the secondary depth and packages. Just needs to be coached up.

The black of depth on the front 7 is terrible. That's the biggest weakness. Today's NFL needs rotation. Watch the bills this weekend. A $100mm DT playing about 50% of the defensive snaps.

We have very good depth on the defensive line.  Horton and Love are both solid veterans, and Julius Peppers is not a starter, but rotates in. In fact, comparing the snap counts, our de's rotated more than the bills did, while the DT's rotated a little less.  That is likely to change for us if Butler is ready to go.

While I appreciate you trying to discuss our team in actual football talk, I have to disagree.

Let's look at what you said part by part:

1. #1 defense needs better depth on the line -

DE depth - Peppers, Johnson, Addison, Horton, Hall which is a pretty good rotation

DL depth - Star and KK backed up by Love and Butler   how is that not deep?

LB Depth - Kuechly, Davis, Thompson, Mayo, Cash, Jacobs, Norris  Best starters in the league, and Mayo and Cash are pretty solid.

2. better package players for nickel and dime -

Captain Munnerlyn is widely recognized as one of the top nickel corners in the league, not to mention Shaq wh can step back to play the buffalo nickel position

3. Good inside man coverage guy. - see above

I am just saying, don't overlook the depth just because the starters are as good as they are.

#1 defense is not out of reach of this team, as long as our safeties stay healthy.

As much as I like Davis and keuchly I don't like Thompson.   I'd like to see that upgraded but highly unlikely. The defense is different this year than years past. So maybe he will fit better but he gets exposed a lot

The idea that y'all traded for a CB known for inside coverage right before the season started is evidence of concern.

The DL, short is overrated. Though, I will disclose I thought ealy would do better here. I think they need young, longer body players to rush the middle so the Lb's don't have to

KK Short is NOT overrated. If anything he is highly slept on by most everyone nationally. He's the 2nd most disruptive interior D linemen in the NFL today. You will see why on Sunday. I really hope Big Vern makes it back healthy. A rotation of Vern, Star and KK equals nightmares for opposing offenses. Shaq is a fuging beast too, I don't know what your talking about. He is probably playing out of position though. He will take over for TD probably after next season. I do not like the fact that Shaq has to come off the field so much due to nickel or dime coverage.

While I appreciate the fact that you are trying to talk football, and not just trash. I have to tell you your assessment is tainted with opposition bias. You know just enough to be dangerous.

There is a very real possibility that our D will finish in the top 5. Whether you believe in our players or not, we are darn good. We have a front 7 that is expected to be one of the best. Our SS is coming off 2 consecutive Pro Bowls. Our FS leads all Ss in INTs over the last 2 years. One of our CBs is being considered as a star in the making. Our NB is considered one of the best. And our other CB is a 2nd year up and comer.

Scoff if you will. Us Panther fans? We truly have a Defense that can be very very good. AND, we have Cam fuging Newton. Yeah, we gon be good. Hence, we are thinking deep Playoff run, while you are still waiting on the Playoffs. Sorry, that wasn't a nice way to finish. Oh well.

I literally have no idea why I said overrated. I meant underrated. I apologise.

Shaw is a very good round peg playing in a square position with two players that can mask the flaws of his game and lack of skill for the particular scheme

That is such excellent analysis.  You sure you're not Beane, here to troll us?

I said they'd finish up there. But the distance between top 1, 2 3. Is great.  I just don't see it yet.

Thompson is an great outside LB/buffalo nickel player. He is fast, and is getting better at reading the plays. The nickel back was brought in for depth. Not to replace Munnerlyn, who can also play outside if injuries dictate.
