What Christian McCaffrey's Presence Does To A Defense

To be fair he's probably the more classy Saints fan on this board. He's tolerable.

But yeah his CMC comments make me laugh. Sure, CMC had mistakes and he's a rookie. But to say he's a scatback is pretty laughable.

He's probably never even watched CMC play a game.

I mean, he got 18 touches, 2 less than Stewart. I didn't find it was all that centered around CMC. He just seemed to be the only guy Cam could hit consistsently today. He looked about like what I expected. Pretty hard to catch 1 on 1 in space. The problem is, NFL speed is different than college and the pursuit gets there a lot quicker after you make a guy miss.

He averaged 3.6 a carry. He had a couple nice runs at the end of the game against a defeated defense. Before the drive had carried 10 times for 27 yards.

Him having 2 nice runs at the end of the game doesn't change that he's a scatback.

First half = 5 rushes

5 yards

5 yards

3 yards

-2 yards

4 yards

If not for that -2 carry where the 49ers sold out on the run he would have averaged 4.25 yards per carry.

But go ahead, keep trying to sell your silly "scat back" theory. No one is buying.

The gameplan Shula had was terrible. Completely hampered what CMC could've done by making him the sole focus rather than spread the ball around. 49ers knew that the ball was going to CMC. Panthers didn't even reveal much at all.

I have a feeling the Panthers came in not showing their full deck of cards. Expect that to happen around week 3 or 4 where we see this offense's full potential.

I'm not sure I agree with your assessment, because I don't think we saw the entire game plan.  Shula kept it slow and conservative and fed CMC a steady diet of "get used to the NFL" carries.  We showed a little wildcat and lined him up at WR, just enough to keep the 49ers guessing.  But I'm betting there's still a lot left to show, and once the Panthers started to assert themselves Shula elected to not show it.

I saw Samuel get on the field for a play that never executed because of a time-out.  When the Panthers took the field again he wasn't out there.  Did he get any snaps?

Except, everyone outside of Carolina lol. I'm still trying to understand how YPC has anything to do with a runners running style anyway.

Let me know when he breaks a tackle.

As did Jonathan Stewart.

Is Jonathan Stewart a "scat back"?

Before that drive, Jonathan Stewart had carried the ball 11 times for 35 yards.

Who cares if he doesn't fit someone's preconceived notion of what a running back is supposed to be.  He is clearly a weapon and did pretty well for his first game in the NFL.  Those who don't want to see how he opened things up (even on the Stewart touchdown), are just haters who choose to be blind.

    • I want to throw in how much easier it is for a QB to develop and improve with a good oline.  Huge credit to the front office for spending the money on our two guards.  Cade Mays also had a 2nd really good game starting at center.  Love how he has developed and hope he's the real deal. Look at what Stroud is dealing with now in Houston after injuries and problems with their oline.  Strouds accuracy has been greatly affected as it seems like he doesn't trust his protection. Canales is doing a great job developing Bryce.  I think the QB whisperer might be for real. And obviously big props to Bryce.  First round pick that looks horrible in his first year.  Different coaches and systems.  Fans and media are calling him the biggest bust in NFL history and he looked like it in the first two games this year.  Gets benched.  Young man keep his cool and just continued to work and only worry about what he can control.  I hope things continue like this and we end up with a great success story. Bryce Young kept pounding.
    • Outside of Philly (who currently is #3 in pass defense) the rest of our remaining opponents are bottom 1/3 of the League in that regard.  Let's see what Bryce can do versus bad pass Ds.
