Shannon Sharpe Says NFC South Will Feature Three Playoff Teams

I don't think the Saints finish last again, and if you want to suggest that just getting healthy is going to make the Panthers better, you need to give the Saints the same benefit of the doubt there as well.  It's beyond bizarre though, that with as much as they've invested in defense for the past few years they've still been terrible.  It can't be just personnel, at some point a rational person would look at the coaching staff and wonder what's going on there.

I get that Rob Ryan was terrible, but to be honest the guy they replaced him with doesn't seem much better.  He had one year of DC experience at Denver before going to Oakland as a HC and then to the Saints, and in that year the Broncos were 24th in the league.  The next year, after he was gone, they were 4th.  He's had one full year as the Saint's DC, and they were at the bottom of the league last year.

I think Cameron Jordan and Sheldon Rankins are legitimate starters who would see a lot of time on any roster.  But with them the Saints plan to start Alex Okafor (13 tackles, 2.5 sacks) and Tyeler Davison (9 tackles, 0 sacks) with them, who are the very definition of JAGs.  And that's their starting group--there's nothing at all to brag about there and their depth is even more 'meh' along the line.

I like what they have done with their linebackers, and think AJ Klein is going to shine for them.  If everyone stays healthy they're going to be a good unit with solid depth.  That will help with the running game, but again there's no threat of pressure from these guys.

Lattimore is going to make them much better overall in coverage.  Vaccaro is good, I don't know who would argue he's not.  I don't think anyone's afraid to throw at PJ Williams, but the secondary as a whole ought to be pretty respectable.  Based on recent seasons, there's a significant "if" factor there where injuries are concerned.  I don't know how good their depth is here, but I think it's average at best based on last year.

At the end of the day, I don't see where the pressure is going to come from, other than Jordan.  And no one is afraid of their DC scheming around their weaknesses.  On paper they look better than the 32nd ranked unit, but the same could be said for last year as well.

So at best there's an average defense and Drew Brees under center.  Assuming that he hasn't lost anything, that's a recipe for a decent season and potentially the playoffs.  But in a loaded division, the only way that happens is if a lot of things go right, and that's a rarity in the NFL.  This year I respect the Saints, but there's no fear at all of them.  And to suggest that their roster has no holes is just plain wishful thinking.

Where's a hole on the roster? I'll wait

lost in the mix of this ridiculous conversation was the reality that new orleans IS a hole....it's literally the toiletbowl of the Mississippi, so there's that.

but looking at the way the game in minny is going...where aren't there holes?

So where in the hell is The Truth 1886 now.  Let's talk about New Orleans and their great defense that just gave up 29 points to an average Vikings offense. LOL.  Or their great offensive line. We won't see his nor hair of him until week 3 when he comes out of the swamp to talk crap again

Maybe because they had corners off the street starting since game 2 last year. Or maybe the fact they never had starting quality line backers. Great thing about it is they addressed those issues. Why were the Panthers trash last year? I'll wait

Lol Saints had the most sacks in the preseason and had the 2nd ranked defense"bu bu bu but they still look the same" hahaha

Yall need to take off the homer shades. Saints have by far a better roster. Panthers have arguably the worst roster in the NFCS.

Any thoughts on the Saints now dog?
