Honestly, I feel and hope it's because people see what a sham the NFL is...  i think the season ratings were down across the board last year bc our Superbowl opened people's eyes to how rigged the games are.  In addition to that, I think people have grown tired of Goodell and the NFL's hypocrisy...  their inconsistency on punishments and enforcements of them, their repeated demonstrations of dishonesty, and the inherent toll the game takes on players all factor into it.  People are tired of their bullshit and greed, and to be honest, the game is dying.  In a couple of decades it will be a shell of itself.

Yeah everyone is sick of Goodell and referee favoritism.

The simplest answer for drop in ratings is that the market is over saturated. 10-15 years ago we had college on Saturday, and NFL on Sunday with Monday night game. You had a small window to actually watch football, so if you wanted to watch, you watched those day.

Now, during the season, there are more days with football on than not. You can watch whenever you want, as you have more options of when to watch.

The supply of football has risen, while the demand has remained essentially static. Therefore, ratings will decrease over time as fans learn they have more to chose from.

Football, from viewer standpoint is elastic, many things can replace somebody free time, so while I believe the ratings drop is tied with the oversupply of football viewing times. Poor officiating, lack of competition, people sitting during an anthem or any other "issue" will cause a further drop in ratings.

Yet the ratings weren't down 44%......

That's because a lot of people are still holding out because their team isn't joining in the protest. The more widespread this becomes, the lower the ratings will go. People are already leaving ESPN in droves and it's not just because they are cutting the cord, although in many cases, it's why they are cutting the cord.
