Voth keeps cutdowns in perspective

top dawg

Bill Voth has answered a few twitter questions regarding all the happenings causing some people to get their dander up.

Here are some of his points, paraphrased of course.

1. Having "surprise depth" in the form of Cameron Artis-Payne is a good thing, even if Cap doesn't have a jersey on game days.

2. Yes, we have two kickers, but we haven't really lost anything by Hurney hedging his bets waiting on a potential draft pick for a few days.

3. Signs that the fullback position was being phased out started last season as Mike Tolbert's snaps began decreasing, so the fact we don't have a FB doesn't really mean too much.

4. It was an oddity to have a QB who played special teams, but it was way past time for the team to acquire some talent that could actually play the position, and, like it or not, Webb was easily expendable.

These are essentially the same things that some of us have been saying all along. None of what's happened is really a big deal. Perhaps coming from Voth on behalf of Panthers.com, some of you will take it better (or not). If you want to read more, then here you go.

If we had a good FB would we still be using them?

Still no good answer why DA is on the roster.

We're wasting space to maybe get a 6-7th round pick. Apparently we will use that on another interesting prospect like Armah who we'll not use or even desire to have on the team. Seems worth it.

The Panthers haven't drafted a QB since they drafted Cam, which is about how long it had been since Joe Webb last threw a pass in a regular season game. It was most definitely time to find a young QB to develop. Time will tell if Gilbert or Kaaya can turn into decent back ups but this needed to be done. You can argue that they should have cut DA instead of Webb, but I would refer you to the first sentence of this post. It has been 6 freaking years since Joe Webb last threw a pass in the NFL. DA might have had a bad pre season but that doesn't necessarily mean he will be bad in a game that counts if we need him. Obviously, he won't be as good as Cam, but who would?

3. then why draft a fb?

More importantly why do you draft a FB in the 6th.....he makes the 53.... they rave about him in pressers..... then cut him to keep the kicker they drafted in the 7th................Supposedly to get a draft pick in exchange.

oh I see, keep the 7th for no better than a 7th but throw away the 6th.

Dont worry about sharpshooting, cause I could very easily create another post to explain it from the other perspective.

just wanted to throw out all the info on basically trashing a 6th rounder in favor for a 7th rounder. Apparently draft picks are only important when the meet the current narrative, and not the ladder.

to be clear, I think we're in good shape now. Better than I thought a couple days ago anyways. I'm excited for Sunday!

I wondered why we drafted Armah also because I'm fairly certain we could have signed him as an undrafted free agent, but Gettleman did those kinds of things.

I do know this, for all the talk about 6ths and 7ths being important, GMs, including Gettleman don't/didn't treat them that way when it came time to make cuts, move up or use them in trades. This is not to say that you can't luck up on some good ones, but the percentage of that happening is low. They may as well be glorified UDFAs.

Here's a thought. Convert the draft to two days.

Day 1: Rounds 1 and 2

Day 2: Rounds 3-5

After rounds 1-5, let the UDFA period begin!
