So apparently Hurney had a man crush on Kaaya

He loved Cam too... and Luke...

I guess he didn't love Jimmy that much considering he waited until the 48th overall pick to select him without trading up.

He tried very hard to trade up for Clausen, and risked costing us Newton in the process.

How so?  If you had read a little further in the article KSpan posted, you would have read (which was also included in most articles at the time):

Quote

He called the St. Louis Rams, who had the first pick in Round 2, 33rd overall. But the Rams wouldn't make a deal, apparently because Hurney was not willing to surrender a future first-round pick for the third consecutive year

So yes, he did try to trade up, but contrary to popular thought, the 2011 #1 pick was never in danger.

He tried to trade up. Tried hard. Thank God the man had the sense not to let go of yet another first rounder, and it says a lot to me about Hurney's reputation at the  time that every team he contacted was trying to get it.

"Carolina general manager Marty Hurney didn't prescribe to that line of thinking, however. We know now that Hurney spent the day trying to trade up into the second round, never thinking that Clausen would fall all the way to Carolina's spot at No. 48.

Hurney tried to trade all through Round 2, but kept running into the same problem.

Alas, he sat there at 48 and got Clausen anyway, prompting him to say "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make."

He didn't trade up though, because it cost too much. He wasn't willing to drop a third and multiple picks like Gettleman was willing to do for Funchess.

He had already traded a first for Everette Brown, another first for Jeff Otah and the #33 overall pick for Armanti Edwards. And even after failing to trade up for Clausen, he still drafted him.

There is no scenario here where Hurney comes out looking smart, or even competent.

Anyone know how much "development" or how he was being used before coming here?

Seems like a great pickup for us.

Kaaya was drafted in the 6th round this year and didn't make it out of Detroit's camp.

I love the Kayaa signing, gives us something to develop behind Cam a la Garropolo. I just hate that we had to let Webb go

No, not like Garropolo. Garrapolo was a 2nd round pick drafted to play behind an all time Great who is pushing 40 and by all means intended to be the heir apparent.

Kaaya is a 6th rounder who got cut in his first training camp and is being signed to hopefully compete with an aging #2 to backup an MVP caliber QB in his prime.

Big difference.
