Cutting Webb did not go over well in the locker room, per Joe Person

It's not that Joe Webb being cut upsets me, it's the double standard that is applied to others throughout the roster.

If you're gonna cut Webb, that's fine, but you better send Anderson, Gano, and Jones with him.

This team is just too political to have have continuous success. Gettleman was too much of an ass and Hurney is too much of a pushover. There's a fine medium that needs to be found, but unfortunately, we don't have the brain test to locate that medium.

Was Webb every going to contribute in a way that could carry the team as a veteran?

You only put money into vet players that will carry the team. The rest of the roster spots are for core depth or potential players that could be gems. Keeping mediocre players or overpaid vets who are not contributing at a top level need not apply.

Fans got too comfortable filling out a roster with mediocre the past few years. That is over now.

In a word, yes. A guy that could play backup to several positions and was liked by everyone involved is replaced by some guy that (excuse me while I whip this out...) COULDN'T EVEN MAKE BACKUP IN DETROIT!!! I bet he real good 'n stuff, tho.

Hahaha double standard around here isn't it?  Gman can cut guys like Smitty and Norman yet he is a God.  Hurney releases our 3rd string QB and he has killed the locker room.  Smh

No double standard coming from me. I think the GM is fine to make the tough cuts. Smitty getting cut stung. Norman getting released stung more but I understood the reasoning behind both.  I think a lot of people, myself included, can't get behind the reasoning of letting players with value (webb) or potential (armah) potentially walk in favor of keeping two kickers. I can't even figure out why we got rid of Gilbert in favor of some other random QB.

It isn't that guys are getting cut... its who we are keeping instead. makes no sense.

Sorry, this is just standard pre-season over reaction when a beloved 3rd stringer is cut and a couple of hopefuls don't make it. Then there's the inevitable round of "why did we keep such and such Jabroni?" handwringing followed by first week "I told you so"s if we lose and "well, it still sucks" if we win. It all fades out by game 3.

Me, I saw a couple of guys I like not make the team and a couple that I had no knowledge of get uniforms and roster spots. And I realize that those folks either have never contributed a whole lot and that the unknowns brought in might have some traits the staff is looking for for future development.

I sure am glad, though, to see that our first stringers look pretty darned good and that we have a couple of new rookie presences among them that could be long-term playmakers and stalwarts for future seasons. I'm seriously happy about the return of Pep and I'm cautiously optimistic about Cam's recovery. I'm hopeful that the Kalil brothers will be the first brothers on the same team to make the Pro Bowl this season (wouldn't that be a hoot) and I'm hoping that the young running back will push JStew to his best season yet. And I fully expect Olsen to get his 4th 1,000 yard season and TD to go out with his highest number of tackles ever and another ProBowl appearance.

And here we sit, a few days from the opener with San Francisco, and I'm hoping that by the end of the season, all of these guys (even the no-names) will be getting a ring out of this season and the chance to be a Champion.

We replaced Webb with a younger option with more potential.  Armah is on the PS.  We will get rid of one of the kickers soon enough.

I think you are correct. In the end when one of the Kickers gets released and Armah gets put on the active squad it will make more sense. It is just the hanging onto the 2 kickers for too long that is mesmerizing to me. They have a full Pre Season for a battle between the two Butker misses zero kicks and Gano misses 2 kicks. What was the Pre Season battle between the kickers for....... absolutely nothing. That is the only thing that gets me with the decisions made. I guess it comes down to giving the Veteran Kicker one more audition to fail and if he misses one kick he is gone.

That is the dumbest sentence I have ever read.

So, you believe a team should put millions into a mediocre vet who has never made a significant difference in a game for 4+ seasons and whose production could be easily replaced by a young player who costs less than 1 mill per season?

You must have been a big supporter of Soliai, Oher, and Harper. Load the team up with those vets and give them all the money. Give me a young unknown to test and develop before wasting money and time on those used up vets who have little to no future.

I believe the team was hoping the competition would light a fire under Gano. The team really wanted him to show out, and win the job in good fashion. Unfortunately, it seems as though we still have the same ol Gano. He ain't the worst, but he is far from the best. So some folks are all up in arms about him still hanging around.

Also, if Gano is on the roster come the 1st game, his salary kicks in. So now we have a kicker most folks don't even want. With a salary that is far to large for what you may get. Folks are hoping that we get a trade offer for Gano, or outright cut him before he hits the books.

I would be completely surprised if we have 2 kickers on the roster come game time. But hey, this is the Panthers we are talking about. Anything is possipable.

Oher and Harper were great pick ups. No one gave them all of the money lol. That is why you bring them in... they are proven in this league AND they don't cost as much as younger guys. Yes, aging vets have a limited future, that is why their contacts aren't long.
