Three reasons the Panthers could lose to the 49ers

Our coaching staff have proven they can game plan, with everything clicking in 2015 we were usually up by 20 at the half. However, even with that group they were very poor at adjusting.

Well, you can't game plan what you haven't seen. That is what worries me.

My fear is shula.

I think that we either trade a kicker or cut one in the next two weeks.  There's nothing one does particularly better than the other--i.e. it's not a Kasay/Lloyd situation.

As far as the 49ers, we're going to run the ball down their throats.  And there's nothing like a few short passes out of the backfield to knock off some rust.  Shanahan may think he knows the Panthers defense, but Steve Wilks is going to bring a decidedly different style than McDermott, and we just plain have more talent.

I like your thinking!  Let's go drink some scotch.

I think you're right on the money Igo. I think Cam will look rusty,  we'll try and mask that with our run game but the 49ers know this. So they'll stack 8 and 9 in the box and dare Cam to put his shoulder to the test, and even bring them on a blitz regardless if it's a run or pass. They're going to look to stop us dead in our tracks on first down to try and make 2nd or 3rd down a passing situation. There is good news and bad news in this scenario,  the good news is we have CMC and he should be designated to get the ball via screen pass to slow down that rush and back their 8 or 9 guys in the box off. That way we can run again and Cam gets comfortable. The bad news is Shula...

I have been thinking about this too.  I think we got offers but not to Hurneys liking.  After the first week or two and a team gets desperate for a kicker they'll make the trade for one or the other.

I think the Bears were one of the teams inquiring about either.

I do think the Panthers go into San Fran and win this week. However, I am not supremely confident about it.

Last year I was worried about Trevor Siemian performing well and the offensive line performing poorly.

This year, these three reasons worry me the most.

Someone talk me down.

I think you are hugely off base on the kicking situation.  First of all, if a kicker can't kick while feeling the pressure of competition, he shouldn't be kicking in the NFL and would not be a guy I want attempting a game-winning kick in the Super Bowl.  While Gano is not the best pressure kicker in the world, having Butker shouldn't have any effect on him whatsoever.

Also, I don't think Butker is here just in case Gano fails, I think he is here because neither one has been consistent enough in both practice and games to have taken the job.  And if we did drop one of the kickers, who would we keep...a guy that won't dress on game day anyway.

So, don't you think it is more important to make sure we make the right decision on which kicker to keep...even if that means giving them an extra week to separate themselves?  After all, that non-dressing player will likely have little to no impact on games, but whichever kicker we choose can be the difference between winning and losing.

Fair points , now think of 3 reasons why the Panthers will win ....I'll get it started

#1 The front 7 ..against Brian Hoyer..who isn't an unknown commodity.

Number 2, SF's run defense was terrible last year.  Unless its improved dramatically, Stewart, CM, and company should have a good day.

Two things that mean the same, one is sugar coating it.

This is really a nitpicky point, but nothings sugar coated.  You are saying that Butker is here only as insurance, I am saying the team is still waiting for one of the guys to separate themselves.  Now I do agree that the team would prefer Gano be the guy that steps up (just like they typically prefer vets), after all he is more of a known commodity, but ultimately, they want one guy to take the job...neither has.  It's really no different than the competition at any other position.

Kicker is unlike any other position on the field. It really is an individual sport, most of which is mental.

Teams typically go out of their way to instill confidence in their kicker. For this reason, 1 is only kept.  Should a world beater all pro kicker be able to block everything out and none of that should matter? Sure.

Do the Panthers have one of those or any prayer of one of those this season? Nope.

The 49ers should be a better group defensively with the talent they have added in the last two years combined with the fact they got rid of their awful defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil.

Defensively, the Panthers need to harass Hoyer early. If you apply consistent pressures and hits on him early, he plays extremely erratic and it makes him more prone to making a mistake. If Hoyer starts to roll, then I would be concerned. I expect Shanahan to go run heavy early so Hoyer doesn't throw it more than 30 times.

I'm pretty sure we'll see a new level of nastiness and aggressiveness that I felt like was missing sometimes when we had McDermott, especially if we run out to a quick lead.

I'm heading out to San Francisco with the @RoaringRiot. Let's get that win and start our quest to win Super Bowl 52.

I agree with the mentality that it puts a guy at the starters back shoulder.

I also think that because we drafted one and the other is, as kickers go, decent.   As someone posted last week some teams were interested in one or the other.  Hurney might be holding onto one for a draft pick.  If we end up keeping two for a week or so and end up with a 4-7 draft pick than it might be worth the holdout.
