Brian Hoyer at QB enuff said.

Defense one of the worst in the league.

Receivers aren't much with Garcon, Goodwin & Taylor(TE)

RB's/FB could be an issue with Carlos Hyde and Kyle Juszczyk but that is about it.

Holy poo I played them week one in Madden and they had Hoyer and I figured their real starter got hurt in preseason and the computer did autofill roster.

He is really their starter.

We better win by 20.

They've got a lot of defenders drafted for a 3-4 defense, but they've been switched around to fit into their new 4-3 scheme.

That means they have few true 4-3 edge rushers. They do, however, have plenty of interior pass rushers, so thankfully our strength in the OL is our interior.

Their linebackers are solid; their secondary is a little unsettled and patchwork, but not awful.

On offense, Brian Hoyer at QB, Carlos Hyde is solid, but their OL outside of Joe Staley is a mess. Their WR's are a combo of past their prime veterans, decent 3rd/4th options, and unproven youngsters.

Coaching is a total wild card with them as Kyle Shanahan is a first time HC with a brand new staff.

On paper, we're clearly better than them. Obviously, though, that doesn't always equate to victory. Shanahan's offensive scheme has given us trouble before, but he's not working with Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, and a top-5 OL anymore.

I also think our offense can have a big day throwing the ball - assuming Cam is healthy enough to play at a high level. Reason being is I don't see them generating enough of a pass rush to disrupt Cam and their secondary can be beaten.

I imagine we're going to go in planning to run the ball a lot due to Cam's shoulder, but in all honesty that could be a mistake. Their defense (both their LB corp and DL) is set up much better to stop the run than it is to rush the passer, so coming out throwing and letting that set up the run could be the best strategy, but with Cam not at 100% that might not be possible.

All in all, we're objectively better than them talent-wise and match up pretty well with them on top of that. Even with Cam not 100%, there really isn't any reason we shouldn't win this game, and by 10-14 points at that. But, of course, this is the NFL (any given Sunday and all that) and opening day has produced plenty of upsets in the past. If we don't show up ready to play, this team is fully capable of beating us.

That said, Ron Rivera is generally pretty good about having his team ready to go for week 1 and we're not playing the defending Super Bowl champions this year.

MY PREDICTION:

Panthers 26, 49ers 13

I agree there just might be more running then we might usually see, but also look for  McCaffret to get short passes out of the backfield from Cam and see him work some magic. Also I see a productive game from Greg Olsen as well. I think your prediction is pretty spot on.

Only one person worries me. Thier head coach. I think him leaving atl is alot bigger deal than people realize. A offense coached by him will he scary. Hell he made poo stain Matt Ryan look like an MVP

He may have made Matt Ryan who was a POO STAIN look like an MVP, but now he has to work with Brian Hoyer who is a FULL LOAD and make him look like an MVP. :)

Apparently though he's worked with Hoyer before and done well with him. What I worry about is Shanahan's strength and our biggest weakness. Splash plays. Look at the Pittsburgh game we controlled most of that game but we gave up big plays on ST and with our up/down secondary. Goodwin, Garcon, Hyde and Bolden can make those plays that make a mockery of ball control. If we are poor on ST or commit turnovers we could end up undeserving losers despite the balance of play in the game.

i have two things that worry me about this game.

a new HC trying to make a name for himself playing against a team that he has burned pretty bad before. it's important for him to make a name for himself early on. going to come down to scheme for them.

it might not make a difference if we're going all out, but that's the thing. will we be going all out?

i think the players will be all in, but my fear is our coaching staff starting out slow and playing it safe (which is always a bad thing).

if the 49ers go at it 100% and we do our typical tap the brakes early we could end up losing to an inferior team to start the season like we did buffalo a few years ago and that ends up setting the tone for the team for a while. i can't shake that game out of my head for some reason. i've just got this feeling we're heading into the same type deal. i trust our players, i just don't trust the coaching staff.

right, I think sometimes bad teams try to look really good in preseason to give the fans something to believe in

Also, if you have a new regime, and a young team, like the 9ers, you want to look good for a confidence boost. So playing well in the Preseason means more to teams like that, than it does for more experienced teams looking to use Preseason more for evaluation purposes.

But yeah, for the 9ers. Looking good was good for the fans as well.

They looked strong on both sides of the ball in their 3rd pre season game. Hoyer was damn near perfect. Underestimate them if you want to.

This is not the same team as 2016.  They may not be the Patriots but they are a better team.  They are at home and we have zero tape on their offenses other than 2016 Falcon tapes.   Cam's first real action minus 10 plays since the end of 2016.   We go out there with a W in our pocket we might come home with an L.

We have the talent to beat them and should but underestimating them is a bad idea.

Of course turnovers are a key in any game and if your team is on the losing side of them then most likely that team is the loser of that game. We also have those play makers as well going up against a not very experience defense in McCaffrey, Benjamin, Olsen and Cam so they can make things happen as well.
